Last night I went out to Rock Ir Grill in Old Town. It made me really miss IReland. Instead of a nice smoke free pub where everyone talks to eachother, since, laughs, buys pints, etc... There was a smoke filled pub filled with rude people in baseball caps pushing around. There was not enough room to stand or sit anywhere. It was hot and just not a very pleasant environment. The one cool thing was Karaoke. Until this song came on...
American girls and american guys
Well always stand up and salute
Well always recognize
When we see old glory flying
Theres a lot of men dead
So we can sleep in peace at night
When we lay down our head
My daddy served in the army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag out in our yard
Until the day that he died
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free.
Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flyin in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of july
Hey uncle sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the statue of liberty
Started shakin her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, its gonna be hell
When you hear mother freedom
Start ringin her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue
Justice will be served
And the battle will rage
This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
And youll be sorry that you messed with
The u.s. of a.
cause well put a boot in your ass
Its the american way
Hey uncle sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the statue of liberty
Started shakin her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, its gonna be hell
When you hear mother freedom
Start ringin her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue
I've heard this song before, but somehow being away and coming back and hearing a bunch of rich white boys in baseball caps sing it just made me angry and upset. I know it's just a song,, but you watch the news reports from Iraq of all of these people dying in a stupid war that never should have happened and then hear a bar full of people gleefuly singing about fire and hell reigning down on you courtesy of the red whit and blue. It made me so so sad and wish that I was not from this stupid country. My first morning home I woke up to a news report on NPR about three American soldiers that had raped, tourtured, and killed a 14 year old Iraqi girl after killing her entire family in front of her... Somehow after that hearing a song about Americans kicking some ass and being proud of our soldiers for putting a boot up the ass of other nations just seems wrong. War is a horrible horrible atrocity and it felt ill seeing so many people laugh about it and make it seem like a good thing. *rant finished*
