Reddleman Theater Company takes on Chekhov’s wicked comedy, The Seagull

Baltimore -- Reddleman Theater Company, a new Baltimore-based ensemble, opens its inaugural production on July 27th in the former Crabby Dick’s in Fells Point for a two weekend run.

Enter a world of the depressed and the obsessed: the lousy avant-garde writer loves the callow girl with dreams of becoming an actress who falls for the disillusioned but staggeringly famous novelist who gets dragged along by his equally famous but more self-regarding stage diva of a mistress (the mother of the lousy avant-garde writer). She, in turn, attracts the compulsive name-dropping estate manager like a shrine attracts pilgrims, even as the badass kid who dotes on the lousy avant-garde writer tries to shake the puppydog affection of the sadsack school teacher (<-- THAT'S ME!) and avoid the stubbornly unhappy fate of her comulsive name-dropping estate manager father and his miserable wife. And that’s not the half of it.

Channeling The Magnetic Fields and Samuel Beckett, The Marx Brothers and Marlena Dietrich, this production embraces Chekhov’s biting sense of humor: human beings are ridiculous; human beings are wonderful.

Reddleman Theater Company is a group of under-26-year-olds excited about bringing something new to the Baltimore theater scene: engaging with a nontraditional performing space, experimenting with collaboration as a part of the rehearsal process, and attacking a classic text with a distinctly physical approach. According to its mission statement, “There is nothing stuffy or exclusive about our aims: our two simple goals are to tell a beautiful story and to connect with each other and with our audience.”

The production runs for two weekends from Thursday, July 27 through Saturday, August 5 on Thursday and Friday evenings at 8:00 and Saturday evenings at 7:00 and 10:00, in the former Crabby Dick’s at 606 South Broadway in Fells Point. Email reddlemantheater@gmail.com for reservations. Tickets are pay what you will after the show, but reservations are strongly urged: seating is limited.
