The human race.

So I am now studing gentics in one of my classes and the social impact and the philosphical questions involved in them.

And it's crazy. First I should start out by saying that this weekend we were just playing questions... and one of the ones that came up was, "If you could cure any disease what would it be?" Well, unlike many others out there, most the people answered that they wouldn't because it went against the theory of survivalof the fittest.

I was disturbed by this, however we did ultimatly decide to cure aids because it was not a fair disease in that the people of Africa often aren't educated etc...

So anyways, I had a big debate with myself. Is it ok to do this? Am I being to sympathetic in wanting to cure cancer? Are all of our medical and technological advances creating to large of a population that the earth will not be able to sustain? In this case is it really ok to decide who should stay and who should go? Who would get to decide these things?

Well now I am reading a book about a crazy canadain who felt that we should breed human like we breed dogs. Encourge the fit to continue having children while sterilizing those who do not meet certain criteria. In doing this, we would be creating a better race, a smarter race and possibly would rid the world of many genetically inheratied diseases.

It's scary. Because at some point, these decisions are going to have to be made, and as much as I would like to think that the world would come up with a system similar to that of China (one child) I doubt that would happen. Who is going to decide who can have children and who can't? Probably those men in the white house who are trying so hard to rid us of abortion...
