Why December 25th?

7:27 PM 1/21/08 · I generally refer to Christmas as XMAS because the implied simplification of the name is Christ's Mass, having to do with Jesus. However, Jesus wasn't actually born in December, let along on the 25th of, so I don't think the event has anything to do with him. It's a co·opted Pagan holiday that was originally relating to celebrating the Winter Solstice...

...but like a lot of other things they've included in their rituals, the Christians decided to suppress that which they didn't like and cover it with something they did.

It's a thing.

Halloween is a Pagan event known as All Hallows, when the barriers between the spirit world and the physical weaken and all sorts of things that go bump in the night can now do a lot more than just bump. People wear disguises of a frightening nature to either scare away these things or fool them that they are in fact one of tyhem to ward off harm.

Stuff like that. It's a Christian accepted thing, though only barely as there's still efforts to abolish it. I tend to view XMAS as a Pagan event where Santa Claus, the God of gift giving and general good cheer, goes about the world spreading joy and warmth and happiness. I like that and at least it's on the correct date.

No one can agree upon when Jesus was born but all the projected guesses aren't even in December so really...what's the point?

Now maybe it's not right to poke and prod and be·little Christian traditions. Maybe I should leave well enough alone. Maybe they're just fine as they are and full of good Christian values. Like Easter, which does have actual Christian signficance...

...up until you get to that bit about the giant bunny going all over the place hiding multicolored eggs.

They kinda lost me on that part.

xmas, christianity, holidays, easter
