IM windows - those little squares through which
you sit down and talk to people or rather your keyboard
does. Interfaces they are called methinks. When I logged
in last evening no fewer than six people pinged me.
Simultaneously. At first I thought I would ask some of them
to wait but then decided to experiment.
Multi-tasking, you see. :D
I managed to have conversations with all of them. Just
about managed. It is not easy to switch tones, moods
and vocabulary - and all this apart from basically
concentrating on the literal content.
Let us see what my set of windows contained.
Window 1 : Boredom. Most unusual in this friend, it was
causing me a lot of concern. Tried my hand at some
obvious psychobabble which made the friend smile.
Window 2 : Reproach for having forgotten an
anniversary. Also, some good news about a dilemma
resolved. Finally.
Window 3: A mere acquaintance presuming to be the
closest of friends. Drove me to the verge of very
uncharacteristic coldness.
Window 4: Friendly small talk and a brief tutorial on
how to watch the latest Hindi films on the internet for
free.
Window 5: Daily travel update from a faraway city.
One of my favourites. : )
Window 6: Another favourite. Sharing work-related
frustrations. Just voicing them, not cribbing. Coining
witty words too.
Two other friends logged in later and both pinged me.
[Perhaps yesterday was World Let's - Chat - with -
sillifluous Day. :P ]
One of them was full of excitement at a dream come true
; there was a touch of apprehension too. The other
window brought a cheerful Hello - I - am - back - from - work
- how - was - your - day. Quite a habit with both of us but the IM
window was a mere substitute. For my living-room window. : )
As of now, I am off chat for a few days. Don't want to end up with
a broken Tab key. :P
chat,
friends
