A letter

I went to Maushi's for gappa (and chaha) this evening.
She showed me an old, old letter that Aai had written to her. The
pages, once torn from a notebook are now yellowed. She and Aai
filled me in on the context of the letter.

It is dated 3rd January 1969 - when people wrote real letters and
wrote often to keep in touch. I was amused by Aai's style of writing
as well as by some contemporary references. It was curiously
touching to sense in the words the strong bond these friends shared
even as young girls.

Perhaps I should write a few real letters too. A letter embodies
thoughts in material terms; it has an actual physical presence
unlike all the emails and LJ posts I write. It is also more individual
- the handwriting and even the choice of paper reveal so much about
the writer. Writing letters would also make me feel
less guilty about buying new writing instruments. ; )
