Exquisite fluff

The shewri tree near the bus-stop is laden with
cotton pods. Now they are bursting open and the
air nearby is full of floating bits of
exquisite fluff.

Catching a mhatari(short for mhataricha kapoos)
is no easy task. It involves racing around, jumping
high and trying to grab the elusive little wisps.
I did not try these stunts
at the bus-stop - only remembered doing so as a child.

Today I spent a good 15 minutes at the bus-stop
watching a blackwhite kitten trying to hunt a
mhatari. The kitty was stalking, crouching and
leaping as seriously as a tiger catching prey.

P.S. Yesterday, I chanced on surangi flowers -
which bloom for a very short period at the beginning
of spring. Another rich, evocative and
intoxicating scent - all the more precious because it
is so rare.

P.P.S. Aai's mogra plant has bloomed : )

mhatari, surangi, cat, mogra
