I'm going to take a TESOL (teaching english as a second language) course in August so that some time in the future I can teach English overseas for a year! So I'm researching different countries that I'd like to go teach in, just to fuel my travel boner. On the top of the list are India and Indonesia. I took a course in basically Indonesian culture two years ago and really loved it.
So I'm looking at the official travel warning from the Canadian government, that lists possible risks of travelling to different countries. Here are the risks I've found so far for Indonesia: Avian Influenza, terrorist attacks on Westerners, ethnic and religious tensions resulting in civil unrest, two large volcanoes getting really close to exploding, geographic position along the Ring of Fire, frequent seismic activity, risk of tsunamis, I would need to avoid large gatherings because food and gas prices have gone up so there is frequent rioting, large crime wave, avoid walking on streets after 5 pm, use extreme caution when visiting any public or commercial venues as these have been frequently targeted terrorists, bombings of places frequented by Westerners, a guerilla group that kidnaps foreigners, car bombs and mail bombs frequent, and last but not least, I kid you not...pirates.
Through this I have discovered...

Hmmmm...maybe not Indonesia yet.
