here We put our feet just where they had, had to go
Never to go
The desert landscape flickers by as the Greyhound bus speeds along the dark highway. The scenery looks beautiful at night, what with the simple shapes of the sparse plant life casting intricate shapes on the moonlit sand.
Krystal turns to Sulli with a "Hey, look at this" on the tip of her tongue. But when she looks to her seat partner, Sulli is fast asleep. Sulli's skin absorbs the moonlight well; her skin looks porcelain and almost too fragile to touch. Krystal ends up watching Sulli's face for the rest of the journey instead.
"There is nothing more beautiful than this", Krystal thinks and interlaces their fingers.
§
Everything isn't nice all the time, but it's still nice to be together: this is something Krystal has to keep telling herself. Her personality is so different from Sulli's so there is bound to be friction once in a while.
There are faults that she once listed for reference, but she's since thrown them away. Some still make themselves known whether Krystal is keeping track or not.
Sulli's too oblivious.
Krystal keeps things inside of herself for far too long.
Inevitably, they end up fighting because they've promised to be always together.
This time, they've ended up in the middle of nowhere because they ran out of money for a bus transfer.
"I thought you were keeping track of our funds" says Krystal, seething.
Her eyes are cold and Sulli gets defensive.
"I was!" Sulli insists. "I just made a mistake in my calculations okay? I'm not perfect, Krystal."
Krystal hears accusation in Sulli's voice. Like, "Who are you to discipline me?" or "Are you perfect then?"
Krystal feels a headache coming on. She wants to cry, but she won't lose. Sulli puts on a determined face. She won't admit defeat either. And while Krystal sits at the chipped wooden table next to the front window of their motel room, Sulli flops onto the creaking bed and turns on the television.
There is a factory giving off chemical fumes in the distance and, by the time Sulli figures out that there is static on every channel, both of their eyes are watering.
"This isn't what I wanted" says Krystal, partially mumbling to herself.
"Well, I'm sorry!" shouts Sulli.
And when Krystal looks at Sulli's face, it's all red and splotchy like she's about to cry.
"I'm sorry I brought us here. And I'm sorry that you-"
But Sulli doesn't finish her sentence because her cries strangle her. She bursts out of the motel room, banging the door. Krystal misses a beat and, by the time her hair settles from the whiplash, it's too late to go after Sulli.
"This isn't what I wanted for us" Krystal says to the empty room. "For us."
§
She'll be back, Krystal thinks nervously.
But the ugly technicolor stripes on the television screen mock her.
"You are alone. You are alone. You are alone."
§
Krystal finds a bottle under the bathroom sink that promises a "relaxing bubble bath with special scent!". She tests the product by filling the tub and pouring half of the yellow-green contents into the water. The outcome is a sticky and soapy, bubble gum smelling mess. But Krystal soaks her feet in anyway.
It's already close to midnight. And Krystal chants "I'm not sleepy. I'm not sleepy" to herself. Because if she falls asleep and wakes up alone, Krystal doesn't know what she'll do.
She tries not to think about Sulli. Instead, she tries to wash her hair. They had been stuck on a Greyhound bus for a day and a half. Krystal considers the viscous bubble bath solution between her fingers.
"Will it clean my hair?" she says aloud, but really, she's thinking about auburn tresses and moonlit skin that aren't hers.
§
While Sulli's gone, a call comes. And it's rare that Krystal picks up the cell phone call, but she thinks it might be Sulli, calling and trembling from a phone box a few streets away.
"Hello" she says hurriedly.
She's forgotten to check the caller ID. So when a man's voice comes through the receiver, she's paralyzed with thoughts of 'kidnapper', 'molester', and 'policeman'.
"It's been a long time" the voice says.
Krystal finally recognizes her father's low, bass tone of a voice.
Krystal stands up, phone still on her ear, and she goes where her feet take her. She's nervous, feels like she might be just a little paranoid, but that's what happens when you run away from something or someone. Lots of someones.
"Are you well?" her father asks.
But really, Krystal just wants to know if it was Sulli that had tipped him off, if he knew where they were, where the hell Sulli was. Sulli, Sulli, and Sulli.
She wants to throw down the phone and scream. But she is shaking. This could be the last thread she has to connect to Sulli.
Outside it's dark and the fumes from the factory still choke her through the night air.
"We're fine" Krystal says in a clipped voice.
Her feet carry her swiftly to the front lobby. There are men smoking outside the building ogling Krystal and toeing the sand in front of them. She ignores them and ignores her father's voice as well.
"Come home now. Let's talk. We miss you" he says.
But it's never 'I love you'. And Krystal remembers now: why she needs Sulli, why Sulli needs her.
§
Krystal starts jogging.
Her father gets upset over the phone because Krystal isn't paying attention.
"You haven't changed at all" he accuses. "You're being selfish."
Krystal spots a gas station up ahead. The lights are on, but the inside of the small store is dark. She curves around to the back, where she finds a small, abandoned playground.
But it's dark there. No flood lights for the small baseball lot, no lamp posts of any kind. And she's about to turn back because now her father is yelling at her.
"Come home this instant! Do you know what the neighbors say about us? They say that your mother and I have driven you away. That we're unfit parents! But it's that girl. It's that..."
Krystal drops the phone. There's an echo of a sob that rings out from the small sandbox. It could be a stray cat, it could be a raccoon. But it could also be Sulli.
Krystal runs.
§
There's a tiny voice shouting in the background as Krystal holds Sulli who is squished against the plastic slide and the metal bars.
Sulli sobs openly into Krystal's shoulder, saying things like "Don't leave me", "I love you", and "I'm sorry".
"Shh" Krystal whispers into Sulli's ear. "I love you. I'll never leave you."
When Sulli calms down, she finally asks.
"What is that?"
Krystal realizes that her father is still shouting over the dropped cellphone.
"My father."
Sulli freezes in Krystal's arms.
"Did he...? I mean...Has he...found us?"
Krystal kneels down, face level with Sulli. There are wisps of hair stuck to her face what with all the tears and sweat. Krystal lovingly pulls the strands of hair behind Sulli's ears.
"No" says Krystal gently. "And even if he does find us, even if we do go back, nothing between us will change."
She says it like a prayer and Sulli nods silently. Amen.
Sulli's cheek becomes warm in Krystal's palms. And when Krystal leans down to press her lips to Sulli's, she feels like moonlight isn't the only thing Sulli can absorb well. As she moves her tongue against Sulli's lower lip, she feels the bitterness sweeping away. As they gently bump teeth, Krystal feels the fear and anxiety of their situation diminish like a far away dream. And as Sulli's hands move against the small of Krystal's back, Krystal feels her emotions growing. And whatever this is...love, lust, friendship...Krystal knows that it'll keep growing until the end of her days.
"Let's go back" Sulli says shyly.
Both their cheeks are flushed, even in the cold desert night. They clasp hands, intertwine fingers, and keep them that way until they reach their motel room. Krystal unlocks the door. Suddenly, they are shy.
It's only when Krystal remembers the bath bubbles that Sulli laughs again. Her laugh fills the entire room and echos in Krystal's chest.
"This" Krystal thinks. "This is what I want for the rest of my life."
She only can hope that Sulli feels the same.
