Puppy Factory

When I got home last night, I heard squealing and yelping from the garden and I found out that one of our dogs was giving birth to her puppies. I estimated that they would be born around January but I was so wrong. Anyway, a dog's gestation period takes about 2 months and 1 week so it's pretty fast. I counted four at first, but when the mother started moaning I knew there was at least one more coming out.

(By the way, her moaning sounded just like a human moan. I was a bit creeped out when I heard it from the window, I thought the house ghosts were out and about last night. Haha.)

So anyway, I didn't get to see the pup being born but I saw Raccoon cleaning it up. Normally, I'm not squeamish about these things but when I saw all the bloody, slimy stuff clinging to the puppy and the fresh umbilical cord, I wanted to hurl right then and there. And the mother was trying to cut or rather, YANK, the umbilical cord with her teeth (of course) and the pup clearly was getting hurt and lifted off the ground. I couldn't do anything about it since they were in a corner I couldn't reach. The mother also didn't want any person or dog getting near her. So I watched the whole thing and only went back inside at 2:30am after I made sure that there were no other puppies coming out. The night was very Animal Planet-ish.

As of last night, we have:

4          adult dogs
6          2-month old puppies

aaaaand

5          newborn puppies

15 DOGS!

Hay nako. More sleepless nights, scratched legs, and squished dog doo for me. Not to mention, more strain on my dad's wallet. Maybe we need to buy the huge bags of dogfood now, the ones where you can fit a small child inside. Haha. Well, I'm hoping we'll be able to give the older puppies away by January. They already have pre-assigned owners so there's no problem. But we need to find new owners for the new pups. We're giving away 4 more (one is taken) in 3 months' time. I'll post pictures here for anyone interested (more when they're bigger) and let me know if you are. The mother and father are both half-japanese spitz and half-native. I posted a nice photo of the mother before right HERE if you guys want to check it out. :)
