Received a call at 11:59 this morning from the Fraud Dept. at our bank informing me that it appeared my ATM/debit card had been hacked. Some low-life in/from Montreal Canada had drained our checking account in $200 withdrawals yesterday and we are now technically $900+ in the hole because our overdraft credit line kicked in. No one has a clue how this person obtained the information. My card is in my wallet so it's not a matter of it being physically stolen. So, after verifying that, no the charges were not made by me, yes I do have my card, the bank cancelled the card and are issuing a new one.
I called B and let him know. Neither of us was terribly upset. I was and am pissed off at the inconvenience. The bank suggested closing the checking account and opening a new one today. I vetoed that due to reasons of my own. I checked with B and he agreed. If we close the account, we're moving it out of the current bank to the credit union where I have accounts or to the bank that holds our mortgage. I don't want to do that for several reasons including the fact that we have a 30 year banking relationship with this bank.
The Fraud Dept. says we should have our money back either Wednesday or Thursday at the latest.
Could have been much worse.
