Birdbrain indeed

For the last week or so, a male cardinal has been banging on the kitchen window. He's there all day, every day, sitting on the sill and tap-tap-tapping away. If we go into the kitchen, he retreats to the rhododendron just outside the window. He waits, seemingly impatient, for us to do whatever it is we have to do so he can return to his choses activity. He occasionally sits in the rhododendron and sings his cardinal song, "pretty, pretty, pretty."

He can't be courting a female since he spends all his time trying to drive off the "other" cardinal he sees in the window. Bobby says the little guy flies off periodically so he must be eating at the neighborhood bird diner.

I've suggested that we put either white fabric or paper on the window to stop the reflection. Bobby says no, the screwball bird will figure it out eventually. He may be right. But it makes me sad that the little guy isn't trying to woo a mate. Maybe next year.
