"Frequent Screams of the Patients"

I took a glimpse into Hell today.

I've familiarized myself with certain horrific episodes and incidences in human history, and have a little acquaintance with the more troubling aspects of the human psyche.

And yet somehow I remained just a little smug about my country in some aspects--let's hold up for example the Nazi atrocities of the Holocaust, for example.  I remember asking someone to explain to me, why was the Holocaust any worse than other examples of genocide we've seenin other countries, other times?  And the response was, never in human history had the eradicatoin of a people been so systemized and documented.

Ok, I bought that.

And then today I stumbled upon the charming Wikipedia entry on unethical human experimentation in the United States.
(Go ahead and read it if you like, but it is damn triggery. )

Now I know why some people say there's no God.

I knew that the US Government had done some pretty shady shit, but what I read here simply beggared what I was aware of.  We've all read about Agent Orange and the Tuskegee syphillis "experiment," right?  Bad, bad stuff.

Guess what?

As dreadful as those were?  That's just TWO examples  of the programs and experiments conducted by differing bodies including the US military, the US government, hospitals all across the country, Quaker Oats, for fuck's sake.  If you were poor or disabled or non-white, pregnant, or, Christ, an infant, it seemed to be more than your life was worth to go to a big hospital between 1945 and 1966.  It reads like X-Files, but without the supernatural/alien claptrope, it actually happened.

And if all that horror wasn't enough--we get to a deeper ring of Hell.

MKULTRA.

Project BLUEBIRD.

Project ARTICHOKE.

I feel stupid for never hearing of MKULTRA before.  And, in an absurd way, kind of grateful.  Reading about the atrocities perpetrated on adults and children--yes, children--has really put me in a nihilistic mood, and I don't do well with nihilism.

I won't write about it anymore here.  Go research it if you want.

God's presence is in question, but I know now Hell exists, and it's here.
