Per the Guard/Reserves, my advice is no.

I found my time in the Guard, especially after my particular unit when to crap in 1995, to be a near total waste. You will be deployed frequently, especially these days and there is always one other point to consider.

Right now you have a President you personally agree with. Part of being a soldier is being willing to follow the orders of people you do not agree with, especially if that individual happens to be the President of the United States.

I reached a point where I couldn't abide by one of our Presidents and found the escape hatch. You might find yourself in a similiar situation.

The next question is this. You don't get to pick the wars or missions you go on. The President does that. What if the President picks one you don't agree with? What then? Do you try to get out before your obligation is up? If you do that then what about the effect that will have on your peers in the unit?

I'd be very, very careful about this idea. Joining the Armed Forces is not something which is done at the drop of a hat. It is in many ways a calling.

If you feel that calling deep inside of you for your country, for your people(that is all of them, regardless of political affliation) then maybe it is for you.

If it is for some other reason, money, guilt, some strange notion of affecting change in the military (used to get those all the time when I was in the Army) then to be perfectly honest, the military isn't the right call.

People forget that the military is not a social justice organization.

It is an institution charged with breaking things and killing people.

If you decide to sign up, my thoughts are with you. That said, I really think you should give it a lot of long hard thinking.

Respects,
