I'm not going to say, "Never let there be war again." I don't think humans have that capacity.
I don't know what to pray for on this day.
What do I think of, now that I'm 40 and a mother? I think of those not in uniform, but those who are forced to become warriors. Warriors of the spirit, warriors of the soul, those who fight the everyday devastation, who battle to feed their children, their parents, their grandparents.
The ones who have to get up again after being beaten, raped, tortured.
The ones who have to put one foot in front of the other.
The ones who dare not give "no" for an answer.
The parents who bury children.
The children who bury grandparents.
The people who have to choose between ideals and putting bread on the table, and who are then castigated for their choice.
I don't pray for the dead--I pray for the living.
