After that long, horrible period in which the airwaves were befouled with repeats and *shudder* football1, my television is back. A few (mostly incoherent) words:

That had to have been about the best episode of Castle so far. I mean, I watch it for Nathan Fillion basically... it has funny moments, and I like the supporting cast, but it is not really a good show. Although I don't know that I'm qualified to judge, because I often have it running while I'm doing other things. I'm usually only half paying attention, and when I come back they're on the fourth or fifth set of ridiculous suspects and I have completely lost track of what the heck is going on.

When I say that this was the best episode so far, actually the case file had the same problem as always... I really had no idea what was going on; I missed something somewhere and then they were arresting a guy, and whatever. What I mean about "best episode" was the banter, and the character moments. I often have trouble seeing the chemistry between Beckett and Castle, but the addition of the actress who was studying Beckett helped bring that out a lot and set up a number of very funny moments. And Ryan, with the proposal! Which, woe, completely puts the kibbosh on me reading Ryan/Esposito fic, because I have trouble reading fanfic that breaks up a canon couple and I definitely am anti-infidelity in my fictional characters. So. Boo. But yay.

I never would have guessed that the one thing that V needed to make it super-awesome was the addition of Bret Harrison to the cast. I don't know how long his plot arc is going to be (he's credited in next week's episode, anyway, but let's face it: he's going to be lizard food sooner or later.) Bret, for those who don't know of him, was the lead on the comedies Reaper and the short-lived The Loop. So I was skeptical when I saw him introduce himself as "Doctor" whateverhischaracter'snameis. A drama role? As a scientist no less? But anyway, when he delivered that line about it being too bad that Anna was really a lizard because she was so hot... yes, I laughed. And laughed, and laughed.

So, anyway... I'm rooting for V. I really am, because you don't get big-network scifi terribly often, at least not where the scifi of it all is really front and center. I'm tired of all these shows with reasonably decent premises (Lost, Flashforward, The Event) where there's just a little nubbin of scifi which the characters just don't really seem to notice. Example: if something like the premise of Flashforward happened in the real world, people would be freaking the hell out nonstop until someone came up with an explanation. And yet on the show, the focus was super narrow on how it affected a few characters and they mostly just lived their lives calmly and it didn't ring true at all.

So V... you can't ignore the aliens. And people seem to riot every other episode, so at least they're being people. I'm disappointed at how easily most people have been taken in by the V's message of peace, but still: there are aliens, and they are in every episode. So points for that.

I'm rooting for V, and it was getting better as it went along. Morena Baccarin has been fabulous throughout, and I even am liking Laura Vandervoort's performance now that she's part of the Fifth Column. Generally I've been less happy with the acting among the resistance characters... Elizabeth Mitchell is just so wooden... but I'm cautiously optimistic of how this season will go based on this premiere. My only criticism of the new scientist character is that he so would've published that shit by now.

and, god help me, Tabitha's Salon Takeover. This week's episode was set in Provincetown. So... I've never been. But it seems like it's a hot mess, if that salon is even remotely representative. Anyway, props to Bravo for knowing their demographic. I loved that they brought in a lesbian bridal party for the trial cuts. I also kind of loved that Tabitha strong-armed the owner and his boyfriend of 30 years into getting married, even if the owner looked like he'd rather have been anywhere else. But anyway: what a motley crew that was. If I had hair, I would not let them anywhere near it. Hot mess. Hot mess.

That was completely incoherent, because I was writing it over the course of like two hours as I watched the shows. Meh. It's past my bedtime.
