This post was brought to you by two thirds of a really excellent bottle of riesling. (I had to google "types of white wine" to remember the word "riesling," because that's how good this wine is.)
Previously, on American Idol: someone was eliminated. Poor Elise. I liked her, but she was frequently not quite as awesome as I knew she could have been. We get two themes tonight: the 60s, and Brit Pop. Because that is a pairing that totally makes sense for a mostly-teenaged American audience! (I'm assuming on the demographics here.)
Someone is mentoring them. I think it might be the Joker! He left his makeup at home, though.
Hollie is singing "River Deep, Mountain High," which I only know from Glee. She starts out a little weak; I think Naya Rivera sang this much better, although of course she didn't have to sing it live. She kind of gets into it, though. Yeah, okay, this is kind of hot. She really belted out the belt-y parts; it was pretty sweet.
Phillip is singing "The Letter" by the Box Tops? IDK what that is. The American Idol Screensaver is taking this very literally. I actually do recognize this song, now, and he really did change up the melody quite a lot. Anyway, Phillip has more or less figured out what is going to work for him as a musician, and he's sticking to that, so good for him and all the 16-25 year old women he's going to have chasing after him. It was kind of funky and I liked it. (I would tap that.)
Skylar was going to sing "Knock on Wood," which (based on the clip of her performance for Jimmy) would not have ended well. Instead she's going to sing "Fortunate Son," Which might be interesting. Mmmmm, I don't know. I'm having a little trouble understanding the lyric. I am really not loving this performance. It's got energy, but it's lacking some sort of connection. It's just not her. It ends up being a little karaoke... like the song got away from her a bit.
DUETS! I kind of wish that, as in previous seasons, they were cutting the length of Idol as contestants were eliminated. But FOX doesn't have anything good to fill in the schedule, so we just get more performances, a mixed blessing. Our first duet is Phillip and Joshua, which is a very odd couple. I HOPE IT IS A LOVE BALLAD! There's some banter. They're singing "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," and I'm suddenly having a flashback to college football. Long story. This seems more in Joshua's wheelhouse than Phillip's. In any case, it's fairly bad. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Phillip get down on his knees for... ahem. Sorry. Wine. Aerosmith totally calls them out on not looking into one another's eyes while singing it. Indeed, it was a very "no homo" performance.
Jessica is singing "Proud Mary," and I'm already soooooo looking forward to this. Mmmmmm, I don't know. The "nice and soft" part was maybe not quite soft enough, and the "nice and rough" part was not quite rough enough. I think it was hurt by the fact that they have to keep the songs brief. Anyway, it was pretty good, but it was not really as great as I wanted it to be.
Joshua is going to sing "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," and I haven't really loved Joshua so much through this competition, but I can already tell that this is going to be awesome. YESSSSSSS! Joshua has grown so much as a performer throughout this season; it's actually kind of amazing. He's not really my favorite vocalist, but this kind of song is so right for him.
The judges say (rightly) that Hollie and Joshua won that round.
ROUND TWO - BRIT POP. WHO WILL BE MY WONDERWAAAAAAAALL?
Hollie is singing something I don't know. Oh, no, I do know this. I just couldn't understand wtf she was saying when she named the song and artist. She sang it really well; tonight's really her night.
Phillip is singing "Time of the Season" by the Zombies. Oh, the high notes are kind of bad, but he totally makes up for it when he says "who's your daddy?" Gah, he's not even my type! DAMN YOU, WINE.
These women are very young! They're singing "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher." I mean, it's fine, but I really like the original so much better. Anyway, they were a lot better than the guys' duet was.
See, the problem with the two hour Idol episodes is that my attention span is only about an hour. 90 minutes, tops.
Skylar is singing "You Don't Have to Love Me" by Dusty Springfield. What have we done to deserve this? (See what I did there?) (No?) (Blame the wine!) It's kind of a nice performance, actually. I think she could have countrified this a little more than she did, even. You know, when she's in her mid-twenties, she's going to have an awesome career... I just think she's maybe a little too young to pull this all off, now. IDK. But this was a good performance from her, sure.
Jessica is singing "You Are So Beautiful," and the mentors tell her that it won't work if she's beautiful, and the song is beautiful, and the piano is beautiful -- that she needs something rough in it, or else it will be too loungy. It's actually pretty good advice. So I think they messed with the phrasing a little bit, and it's super-dramatic and awesome. I'm kind of wondering how they had time to light all those damned candles during the clip segment, but whatever: that was fricking beautiful, and seriously, this girl needs to win the season, omfg. I can't believe she was nearly voted off.
Joshua is singing the Bee-Gees. See, when they said Brit Pop, none of these songs were anything like what I thought they were going to be doing. ANYWAY, he's fine, but he's not blowing me away, although that run at the end was pretty hot.
I can't even speculate on the voting, because they're just all so good this year. I guess Skylar might be in trouble? Who knows. I want Jessica and (to my surprise) Hollie to be safe this week. But what I want very rarely has anything to do with the Idol voting results.
YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.
