She picked the following interests from my profile:
1. Bleach
2. Darkwing Duck
3. fantasy writing
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Mai-HiME
6. RPGs
7. yuri
We'll start with #1:
Bleach...
I don't know what got me hooked onto this one. Perhaps it's because I used to follow Naruto until it got so choked with filler that I couldn't watch it anymore (Bleach is heading in that territory, too, but my knowledge of it comes from the manga, which I'm still reading). I think there's something about ghosts and the afterlife that drew me to it, and the fact that there are licensed fighting games available for it that don't totally suck. Yay, Blade of Fate!
Next is #2:
Darkwing Duck...
When I watched cartoons after school, I always used to look forward to watching this show. Disney cartoons were the thing to watch back in that day - DuckTales, Chip 'n' Dale Resue Rangers, Gummi Bears...Yes, oh, yes.
Now for #3: Fantasy writing...
It's really the only genre I have experience in writing, because magic, dragons, and heroic tales interest me the most. The longest I've written was a story about a stage magician forced to change careers due to circumstances beyond her control. I wrote myself into a corner, and couldn't think of anything to write after the seventh chapter. I may decide to start it over again.
#4:
Jimi Hendrix, you're up:
My dad has CDs of almost all of Jimi's songs. He's one of the best guitarists we've ever heard. I always wonder if he would have been as famous as he is now if he hadn't done all of those drugs. Those guitar riffs he pulls off are something else absolutely. Even in
Guitar Hero, I can't replicate 'em.
Moving on to #5,
Mai-HiME:
At the moment, this is the main fandom I'm hooked on, and most of the fanfiction I've written comes from Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome (see "my thoughts on yuri", below). "Magical girls" shows weren't really my thing (I watched a bit of Sailor Moon back in the day, but really...didn't everybody?), but when I read about it via the
TV Tropes Wiki and saw it as atypical for its genre (in a good way), I had to watch. It also helps that most of the characters are charming and complex in their own way (even a few of the bad guys).
What about #6, RPGs?
Okay, when I say "RPGs", what I really mean is console RPGs, both Western and Eastern. And yes...I play them for the story, the customization (what little of it there is compared to tabletop RPGs, but it's there...somewhat), and the fact that I can get hours upon hours out of a single disc sometimes.
And finally, #7, yuri:
Well...um, since it's intimated that
most fanfic writers are girls, they're likely to write fanfiction about
hot guys in suggestive poses and sometimes having sex with each other. I don't write it not because it doesn't appeal to me, but because I suck at writing it and keeping the characters in character. As a male, I'm obligated to go in
the other direction, because I find it easier to write yuri for my favorite characters without twisting them to conform to
certain stereotypes. Oddly, I have yet to watch an actual yuri anime (the closest I've come thus far is Mai-Otome), but as soon as I figure out how to get
Revolutionary Girl Utena episodes on DVD in the proper order, that may soon change.
I don't expect anyone to read/reply to this, but what the heck...it's Saturday.
