Transfixed. Their powers disappeared just as quickly and mysteriously as they had appeared. They woke up one morning feeling rather normal. Sunny was back to her normal, non-illuminating self. Yoona knew her powers were gone the second she bumped hard on the door. She bumped a few more times on walls that day due to her force of habit. Seohyun found her back feeling light, although the feathers from her wings still cluttered her room. Jessica woke up naked her bedroom floor and very much visible. She cursed under her breathe but was rather thankful she didn’t stay in Super Junior’s apartment like she had been doing the past few nights for the purpose of silently stalking one unnamed guy there. Yuri was disappointed to find out she cannot levitate anymore. Meditation and yoga were so much cooler when done in mid-air. Hyoyeon was quite okay with her powers being gone, having now a huge stash of naked pictures of Yunho (it wasn’t technically Yunho) hidden in a box under her bed. Taeyeon had mixed emotions. On one hand, she couldn’t be one of the girls doing the complicated dance steps anymore now that she’s not flexible anymore, but on the other, it might be a time wherein they would exchange powers and she hoped to the high heavens that she’ll get Jessica’s invisibility the next. Or at least that’s what she told herself, having now been so accustomed to them having superhuman powers. Tiffany was the only one absolutely happy from what has happened. She can now have peace and quiet, something she craved for the past few weeks as she listened to the rest of the girls’ inappropriate thoughts. She stayed in her room all day catching up the sleep she had lost.
It was the first morning in the past few weeks that Sooyoung didn’t find herself waking up in a pool of rose petals with dozens of boys piled outside of her bedroom window. It was a huge relief, as having that many boys stalk her for every second of her life (although she had had a few even back then) was something over the top. The word “creepy” was a simple understatement. She started her day with a smile, walking through the carpeted floor that was still covered in a number of rose petals from the day before and enjoying the boy-free scenery outside her window.
It took a few days before the girls adapted to their now normal lives. Taeyeon has finally succumbed to the idea that having powers was just a one-time thing and they won’t have another go at it. Like most of them, she tried to forget about the experience and move on. They went on and did what they normally did before, as the girls of So Nyu Shi Dae.
Sooyoung was the only one having a hard time adapting back to reality (although Hyoyeon now found herself unable to face Yunho without blushing madly or drooling but that was just about it). She didn’t know what’s worse, having thousands of boys hound her annoyingly all day long or having her close friends from Super Junior, Shinee and TVXQ ignore her as much as possible. It was awkward. All of them, of course, remembered what they had done the past few weeks, stalking outside her window, showering her with gifts and promises of a romantic and fruitful future. Even if the boys silently agree that Sooyoung has the qualities they want to have in a wife, their actions were something out of their character and most of them found themselves unable to speak in shame when Sooyoung’s in front of them. And it was especially the most awkward to Changmin. One day he was wrestling with Sooyoung, fighting with her as if she were just one of his younger sisters about who gets the last slice of cake that was Jaejoong’s latest experiment, then the next day he was pulling her closer into his arms, sucking on her lips and shoving his tongue deeper into her throat. It was something new to him. He always regarded Sooyoung as a best friend, a sister even but now… He wasn’t quite sure himself.
And Sooyoung noticed the change in his demeanor. Changmin wasn’t exactly subtle; going out of the room every time Sooyoung walks in, ignoring her when they crossed paths like she was as invisible as Jessica back then when they still had powers, leaving the conversation with other people when Sooyoung tries to join in and simply ignoring her existence. It hurt her. They were inseparable before all the chaos happened, and now they were less than strangers to each other.
“He hates me.”
Sooyoung said as soon as Changmin left the second he realized she was in their kitchen. It was now the 5th time it happened. Unlike the boys of Super Junior though, she found it easier talking to the boys of TVXQ (because in pursuit, 15 outnumbers 5) and she found herself spending more time in their apartment now than before, albeit she talks to only 4 of the boys.
“No, he doesn’t.” Jaejoong said reassuringly as he passes a bowl of tteokbokki to a hungry looking and sweaty Junsu who was fresh from football practice. “He just doesn’t know how to act around you now.”
“But nothing’s changed.” She argued.
“He kissed you like he never kissed a girl before.” Junsu mumbled, mouth half full of chewed meat and vegetables. “He mumbles about you in his sleep more now than ever. I have to say that’s a very big deal.”
Jaejoong threw him a look. “I don’t think Changmin will appreciate it if you tell Sooyoungie here those things.” He said.
“But it’s true!” Junsu whined. “She needs to know, anyway and if Changmin won’t tell her, who will?”
“Definitely not you.” Jaejoong snapped as he handed Sooyoung her bowl. She thanked him with a warm smile.
“At least I didn’t tell her all of what he says in his sleep.”
Sooyoung cocked her head in his direction. “More?” She asked curiously.
Jaejoong butted in before Junsu can open his mouth again to speak. “I think it’s better if Changmin told you those things and not our duckbutt here.” He said forcefully, making Junsu twitch. “It’s not his story to tell anyway.”
“But he’s not even looking at me, much more talk to me.” Sooyoung said sadly. “I just want to know if he’s angry, disgusted, even. I can take it and if so, I’d stay out of his way for good.”
“He’sfarfromdisgusted, that’sforsure.” Junsu mumbled incoherently and Jaejoong shushed him.
“Sooyoungie, just give him some time.” Jaejoong calmly replied. “Although if he is angry and if you really do stay out of his way, I won’t let you. I need you here to give comments about my cooking.”
They exchanged sweet smiles. Junsu, however, frowned. “I can do that job, hyung, you know.”
“You’re an idiot.” Jaejoong greeted as he barged into Changmin’s room with a half-cold bowl of tteokbokki.
“What took you so long?” Changmin whined. “I was hungry since two hours ago.”
“You’re always hungry and it took me this long to give you this because I was trying to console a depressed Sooyoung downstairs.”
Changmin ignored that and quickly took the bowl from Jaejoong.
“You really are an idiot.” The oldest said in disgust.
“I heard you the first time.” The youngest coldly replied.
“She asks about you.” Jaejoong looked at him, eyes both in anger and wonder. Changmin ate albeit more slowly than he usually did when hungry. He didn’t say a word.
Jaejoong shook his head and sighed. He stood up, headed towards the door and before he went out, he turned back to Changmin. “You were never a stranger to my true feelings towards her, and I’m not a stranger to her feelings towards you. But if you keep hurting her like this… I’ll make sure I’ll always be there for her and catch her when she falls.”
Jaejoong closed the door and returned downstairs. Changmin stared at the door. His bowl of tteokbokki now lay on the bedside table, forgotten. He wasn’t really in the mood to eat anyway.
Changmin knew Jaejoong was serious. But the more times he saw her with Sooyoung, now mostly almost hand in hand and closer than they were before, his heart felt heavy. He studied her from the shadows, watched her every move and every expression when she was with Jaejoong. She can’t possibly be falling in love with him, can’t she? Changmin almost always found himself wondering that. It was only after a few days that he wondered again and this time he came to sudden realization. He was the one in love with her. He had been ever since but it was only now that he actually admitted it to himself.
With that realization, Changmin knew he should be running towards her, wrapping his arms around her and saying those thoughts that haunted him in his subconscious. But he froze. He was gifted with intelligence, wit and charisma but the only thing he didn’t possess was bravery. And so he watched as more days of silence between him and Sooyoung passed. But she was starting to move on, while he was starting to sink under all of it.
“We’ll be leaving for Japan soon.” Yunho said as his gaze moved from Changmin to Jaejoong then back to Changmin again. “And we won’t be coming back to Korea for a while.” Now the rest, save for Jaejoong, were looking at Changmin. The conflict wasn’t exactly hushed up between the five of them so, naturally, Yunho, Junsu and Yoochun knew the whole story. It was an irony as the girl involved between the eldest and the youngest didn’t have any clue.
Changmin looked up at the three and raised an eyebrow. He didn’t say anything, knowing anything would say would always somehow lead up to one question: When are you going to tell her? He gazed at Jaejoong and, like in the past few weeks the eldest paid him no attention. They exchanged little to no words ever since that one afternoon and Changmin almost feels sorry for his hyung that he uses it as an excuse not to approach Sooyoung.
“You better tell her before we leave.” Everyone looked up in shock at Jaejoong when he spoke. Changmin stared at him in disbelief. Jaejoong turned to him, eyes glistening, a forced smile playing on his lips. “She misses you.” He said simply. And Changmin was tempted to something snarky about Sooyoung getting tired of Jaejoong’s face that’s why he’s saying this but deemed it was a very inappropriate thing to say at this time.
Jaejoong quickly left the rehearsal room as soon as they have finished. He went to the rooftop to clear his head. Sooyoung’s words last night still played in his mind over and over again. They were alone together on the terrace. Everyone had gone to sleep. It was late but Sooyoung still opted to stay for a while and Jaejoong joined her. She stared at Changmin’s room for a while, eyes glistening until she could no longer hold the tears in. Jaejoong reached over and wiped her cheeks dry.
“I miss him.” She said in a hushed tone. She continued sobbing the whole night and Jaejoong could do nothing but hug her. Sooyoung didn’t say anything more. She didn’t need to. Jaejoong already knew that he can never have her heart. He knew it ever since then, Sooyoung’s eyes never brightened up as much as when she sees Changmin, and this only confirmed what he had been dreading.
Jaejoong sat down on the ground, buried his head on his knees and silently let the tears fall.
Changmin tried to catch his breath as he ran towards So Nyu Shi Dae’s apartment. Their flight was scheduled tomorrow morning. He waited around the rehearsal rooms, searching for the tall girl with the bright smile but she never showed up. None of the girls from So Nyu Shi Dae did. It was only earlier that night that he learned the girls had performed out of town the whole day and wasn’t due back to Seoul late at night.
He knocked on the door hard, catching his breath in between knocks. It was a minute later when Hyoyeon opened it. She blinked a few times, unable to comprehend if there really was a sweaty and panting Changmin on their front door.
“Changmin-oppa, what are-”
“Is… Is Sooyoung there?” He asked breathing heavily, his heart was drumming restlessly in his chest and he was sure it was not because he ran all the way here.
“Oh… W-wait here.” She went on to search for her, leaving the door open and Changmin suddenly feel like panicking. Before he can move an inch from his spot however, the door opened wider. Changmin’s heart almost stopped as he stared back at her soft brown eyes.
“C-Changmin-oppa?” She exclaimed, her voice a mixture of shock and concern. “W-What are you doing… A-are you alri-”
Changmin wasted no time, pulling her closer towards her and catching her lips with his own. He kissed her as passionately as he had kissed her when he was under her spell, if not more. But now he was wide awake. He wasn’t under a spell. A spell can easily be broken somehow. It was love.
She kissed him back as much as he kissed her. They stayed together for what felt like an eternity until Sooyoung slowly pulled away to draw a breath. She looked up questioningly at him. And Changmin could only give her a simple answer.
I love you.
They were three simple words but they were enough to explain it all.
