So I finally feel like a real college student. I've been looking for a job for a while now and I had been applying to various places with no real success. The other day I was at my friend's apt. and he had the newspaper so I decided to look at the classifieds and tore out some of the clippings of places that were hiring. I forgot all about them until Sunday morning when I decided to call one of them. The guy on the phone told me to just head over there and apply in person. So I went there, it was a Mexican restaurant called Old Mexico, there are plenty of Mexican restaurants here in Tallahassee! The guy was all nice and he told me to fill out an application. After I finished he asked me a couple of questions and then asked me if I could come back at 7 later that afternoon to fill out the rest of the paperwork. He then asked me to come in khakis and a white polo. I didn't have either of those things so I had to go the mall to buy some khakis and a couple of polos. That was an adventure on its own. I just wanted to buy some plain colored, cheap polos. For some reason, every single store I went to was out of Smalls, and if they had Smalls, like Old Navy did, they were HUGE! I ended up going back to Old Navy, after looking in like 6 other stores, and bought one Large polo and two Extra Large polos from the kids section! That's how big those polos were! Well anyway I went back to the restaurant at 7 and the boss's wife was there and she started teaching me the basic stuff of how to take orders and such. She then said "Ok, you are section 5, and these are your tables" then about 5 minutes later a couple came in and sat in my section, and I had to serve them right off the bat. I had barely had any training! Later on I realized that the job was not only a waiter but also bartender, since we need to make our own alcoholic drinks (I'm not even 21, I guess that's allowed here?). So I have to learn a lot of stuff. Sunday went pretty well for my first day though. I served 4 tables and I got $28 from tips, which is decent. I worked again yesterday, Monday, and I served way more tables than on Sunday and made $55, which I think it's pretty cool. I have never made money by working before lol (yes, this is, sadly, my first job :-P). But I am liking it, I just have to make sure I learn all the stuff. I took a menu last night so I can study it and know everything that's in it. I also have to somehow learn how to make the drinks (margaritas, frozen margaritas, long island ice teas, etc...) and even though I've had these before, I never really knew how to make them. Also yesterday my friends Bruce, JP and his sister Dominique came to visit so I had to serve them hehe, that was really nice though, I felt a little more relaxed with them there. I don't work today cuz I have classes all day, but I think I have to work tomorrow. It feels kind of good making my own money now, specially since I just looked at my American Express bill (which my parents pay) and I spent $1,000 this past month! Don't ask me how I did it... I feel really bad because of it, I hope my parents don't get too upset. But I already told them I got a job and they were happy for me. Not too happy though because they know that since I have a job I won't be able to go down to visit them in Miami during the summer, at least not for as long as I would have if I didn't have a job. Even though I love my family to death, I do like the idea of staying up here on my own working for the summer, I need to be more independent.
So yeah that's it for now. I'm a waiter, yay.
Ciao :)
