Point 34 in the LJ Series: A Point of Etiquette.
34: This is always a tough one. Not only is it commonly bungled up by the dipper, but oftentimes it is the dippees that notice.
When you're at a party or some group meeting, but if you can think of at least 17 better things that you could be doing with your time, then the Fake Phone Call Dip might be in order. Normally, the fake phone call is employed when an ugly or awkward-looking man/woman is making ugly or awkward-looking advances and you need a quick escape. This, though, can be employed when you've already announced to the group that you'll have to leave sometime soon for whatever reason. That is generally accepted as long as the excuse is decent, and in some time you will be able to leave. The phone call comes in handy, however, when the party is ultra lame, and you might be looking to leave even before everyone has arrived.
Because this is something of a vexing maneuver, you must employ proper subterfuge in arranging an alarm to go off or, better yet, a partner to call in 30 seconds to a minute. If noticed, you don't have much of a leg to stand on, and now they all hate you.
