Rebecca sat on the broken remains of a stone flower pot and looked up at the sky over Monteriggioni, tracing out the constellations in the stars. It was her turn to keep watch so while Shaun and Lucy were asleep at their desks and Desmond was snoring away in his sleeping bag, she was trying to keep her mind off all the little things that were nagging at her, all of the questions that were going unanswered and all the homesickness that was starting to creep up on her.
She was stirred out of her reverie by a rustling noise behind her. She turned to find Shaun stepping out of the Villa, stretching his arms over his head and yawning.
"So, how are you holding up?" he asked as he sat down next to her.
"Whoa, are you actually genuinely concerned about my well-being?" she asked.
"No Rebecca. It's all part of some ulterior motive I've concocted in order to embarrass you," he said drolly.
"All right, smart ass. I was being sarcastic."
"Well I wasn't," Shaun said, and Rebecca shook her head and looked at the ground.
Shaun took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes, taking her a bit by surprise when he laid his head on her shoulder. He sighed as Rebecca leaned her head on his.
She was so tired. Tired of hiding in the dark places where the Templars couldn't find them. She missed her family, her friends, even her dog. She was tired of the guilt she felt every time she pulled Desmond out of the Animus, dizzy and disoriented like he couldn't quite tell where, or when, he was. She was tired of not knowing who she could and couldn't trust. Ever since they arrived at Monterrigioni, Lucy had begun to disappear for hours at a time while Rebecca kept watch over Desmond in the Animus. She always said she would be back in an hour, but sometimes those hours turned into three, four. She never said where she where she was going or where she had been. Rebecca found herself confiding in Lucy less and less as her behavior continued, and Lucy herself became oddly quiet and distant. It felt like Lucy was slowly slipping away. They had been such good friends all those years ago, but now Rebecca wondered if she really knew who Lucy was anymore.
But Rebecca felt lucky that she still had at least one person she could lean on. Even if Shaun could be a bit of an asshole at times. Their relationship was built on a thin film of mutual respect and a mountain of empty insults, but she knew she could trust him.
"So nice to see you two getting along," Lucy's voice startled them. They turned in unison to find Lucy standing in the doorway.
Shaun immediately stood up and put on his glasses. "I was just making sure Rebecca hadn't fallen asleep on the job," he said. He walked back into the Villa, Lucy smirking at his back as he went. Rebecca turned back to the stars.
"Go to sleep," Lucy said, putting her hand on Rebecca's shoulder. "I'll keep watch."
"You sure?" Rebecca asked, and Lucy nodded. Rebecca started slowly making her way back to the Villa as Lucy took up her spot on the flower pot.
As she reached the door, Rebecca turned back and looked at Lucy. "Lucy?"
"Hm?" Lucy hummed.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
Lucy smiled, sweetly but sadly. She looked like a lost child sitting there by herself. "I'm fine."
Reluctantly, Rebecca went inside and into the Sanctuary. Shaun was back in his chair, his head resting on his desk. He was facing away from her and whether he was simply resting his head or sleeping she couldn't tell. Desmond had twisted his arms out of his sleeping bag and was snoring with half of his body lying on the cold stone floor. It didn't look very comfortable but he didn't seem to be bothered by it, so Rebecca decided not to disturb him. She sat down in the Animus chair and put on her headphones. She closed her eyes but she didn't get much sleep that night. None of them did.
