Chapter 2

These days, there’s not much to do, to see, to say. But it isn’t as if he had anything to say in the first place.

They find him again curled up at the window seat in his room, the windows open and the strong breeze blowing the white curtain into the room. The white uniform with blue stripes hung loosely on his thin frame, and if they couldn’t see him one would’ve thought that the room was empty.

“How is Hayama-san’s condition today?” the tall white coat murmurs.

“He seems to be doing better today,” one of the nurses replies, looking down at the clipboard in her hands. “He was lucid for about an hour and a half today.”

“I see.” The doctor is quiet, looking at his patient with pained eyes, eyes if the others with him had seen him, they would have been certain that the doctor and his patient did not have just a platonic relationship.

“Hayama,” he calls out, hoping that he would recognize him.

Takumi lifts his head, hearing his name, and turns his head. His eyes are hopeful, and they look past him, through the doorway. When he sees that the person he wants is not there, his eyes go hopelessly dark, and he turns his head to rest his chin on his folded arms, thin shoulders hunched and legs curled up against him. He gives no indication of wanting to leave his perch at the window, as if waiting for someone.

Doctor Shouzo Akaike, M.D., is at a loss on how to help his friend.

Short, but I promise that the next one will be longer.
