"Kate's in the castle! There is hope for us all!"

ROYAL WEDDING FLAILING:

I turned the TV on at 5:30am, which was just in time to see all the royals arrive at the abbey. A much better plan than rousing myself for all the TV hoopla that started at 4am, I think.

First of all, CAN WE TALK ABOUT PRINCESS BEATRICE'S HAT. I could charitably call it very Gaga, and uncharitably, ridiculous. Definitely the most memorable hat of the day, though. Second of all, Prince Harry looks DAMN fine in black and gold. Unf. Thirdly, I had completely forgotten that Prince Philip is pushing 90 until the TV announcers reminded me. He also looks damn fine for that age. Finally, Queen Elizabeth and her daffodil-yellow dress. What a delightful little old lady.

Now, onto the happy couple themselves. I didn't think I was going to like her dress when we got the first glimpse of it in the car, as I'm not a fan of V-necklines in general. But the whole dress was gorgeous, and very Kate. Pippa's dress was beautiful, too - there can't be too many people in the world who can pull off a white sheath-dress, but she's one of them. The service was lovely, the address to the couple was moving, but I got very annoyed when the announcers kept talking during the musical bits. >_< But my favorite English historian in the history of ever, David Starkey, was one of them, so I can forgive him at least.

Here's what I found the most moving at all: In all those shots of William and Kate sitting side-by-side in the abbey as the service went on, I was struck by how right they looked. They looked right together, and they looked right in that place. I looked at them and thought, "That is what a king and queen should look like." Whenever I read stories or historical fiction about royalty, that image that the two of them made is what I've always imagined, and it was amazing to actually see it in real life.

Perhaps it's needless to say that I was in a good mood all day long, and I'm SO glad I got up early to witness this moment in history. My heartfelt best wishes to the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!
