Do you think it will influence how the rest of the country is (or is not) influenced by California's actions relating to the gay marriage ban, if the November proposition gets passed (drug decriminalization)? They are both fairly high profile, I believe, but I don't know how well / paid attention to things are outside of the state, biased ( Read more... )

The influence of California isn't based on what IT did visa vi the gay marriage ban, but what a federal court did. Judge Walker held that the government has no rational basis on which to deny marriage to gay couples, and therefore any legislation which prevents them from marrying is trumped by the 14th amendment. If his holding stands (which it sadly probably won't although it is so expertly written that I'll be curious how an appeals court takes issue with it) then gay marriage is going to be constitutionally mandated in Wyoming, Utah, South Carolina, and Alaska.

So I think that drug decriminalization will be influential if passed, but at this point it won't affect the way Prop 8 plays out one way or another.
