Alright, back to talking about the job.
Where was I? Ohhh yes. Money. Contractors make $200 an hour. I'm not going for a contract position. Sure, that much money is awfully tempting. So why do I want salary? Well it starts at 70K a year minimum. Advancement is all performance based. No brown nosing, no BS, just intellect and working hard. That I can do. 70K starting is nothing to sneeze at. Starting out around here I would be making around 40K a year if I was lucky. All company employees, contract or not, get a top of the line Alien Ware laptop with all the bells and whistles. It will have your work programs and a partition for your own personal use. Some of the people use their laptops to play video games to relieve stress at work.
How do the benefits from salary differ from contract? For starters, how about Medical/Dental/Vision. Salary has a $5 copay plan. The max I will ever pay is $5 for any one thing. That is phenomenal. All salary employees get a company car. The car is a Ford Torus, but hey, they will probably be taking care of maintenance and fuel. There is also a company house that can be used and all you have to pay is utilities. Its probably huge, and more than likely fully loaded (tv, video games, etc.). They purchased it to have a place to put up the californian consultants when they were in town. How about schooling? They love to see their employees progress in school. They pay between 80% to 90% tuition assistance, and completely fund any boot camps for certificates you want to go to. One of their parent companies is Seagate. Seagate gives its employees free hardware including new prototypes. I'm having a batch of the new usb 5gig external solid state hard drives sent to me before I even get there. How about vacation. Everyone loves their vacation time right? Most of their contractors only work 6 months out of the year and rake in about $140K. Their salary employees get 30 days paid time off and 2 weeks paid sick leave. Thats better than I got in the military! During those 30 days, the company pays for 15% of it. So they will take care of your air fare or hotel. Air fare is another perk. Since one of their customers happens to be a large airline, they get incredible deals on air fare. It was mentioned that it costs them less to fly than to take a greyhound. Another one of the perks is travel. This can go both ways though. Since I'm currently single or not married, travel is a good thing. Lets me see a bit more of the united states. They have customers over in Canada, and they are opening up something in England, but its mainly in the US. Perhaps I can persuade them to open something on guam or down in southern florida.
The location isn't the best in the world. Mankato Minnesota of all places. Supposedly its not such a bad town. Looking on a map it has its own river, and appears to be relatively small. It has two universities, so its a college town. University of Minnesota is right there, and they have a relatively simple computer science program that I should be able to breeze through. I hear that Minnesota is full of Norwegians and swedes. I'm 1/4 Norwegian myself, so maybe I can find a nice geeky norwegian chick. Plus its Minnesota, so I should be godly beautiful. Or is that New Jersey that I'm thinking of with all the ugly people. Anyways, it is going to be a good time. I've already made a huge impression on them and still haven't met a one of them yet. My mentor is working on a prototype of the idea I pitched to him on a new form of boundary protection that might revolutionize the way network infastucture is accomplished. All in all I'm looking forward to this job. After a few months of being there I'm going to go out and purchase a Mini Cooper S fully loaded. Ohhh yeah, first new car.
