The Airport Goodbye

Jun 13, 2006 23:57

Today I took Sunny to the airport. She was leaving to go to her hometown in Wisconsin to visit her family.

So I picked her up at her house at 12:15 and drove her to Lindberg Field. After about a few miles from her house, Sunny realized that she forgot her paper work or boarding pass on her printer at home. I asked her if she wanted to go back and get it. We were about to turn around, but we decided to keep going because the check-in clerks may be able to print out another pass as long as she has a form of ID. So we didn't sweat it. Once we arrived, I escorted her all the way to check-in and carried her luggage for her as a guy should do for a girl.

Airports are interesting to me. Farewells and reunions. The sadness of seeing loved ones leave and the extreme happiness when they return. A place where emotions are hightened in an instant.

We made it to the check-in desk and was able to print out a boarding pass on the computer. The luggage went in and here we go. Before we parted, we hugged longer than usual and that's when I realized that the sadness was kicking in. We said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. As I walked in the opposite direction of her, I stopped and looked back as she made her way to the boarding gates. I called out her name and gestured to her and she said, "Fabulous!" We laughed and said goodbye once more. I continued walking and I turned around again, watching my dear friend go until she was no longer visible. It was almost like a movie. I would have stayed with her and kept her company until it was time for her to board her plane, but Lindberg Field doesn't allow non-passengers to go beyond the check-in hallway anymore. I felt sad to see Sunny leave, even though she'll only be gone for a week. I shouldn't have, but I did. I guess that's the power of airports.
