i loved you, once,
when under a cool, hazy
evening we watched
stars turn in arcs as
pieces of heaven silently
shattered across the night
i loved you, once, as
rough seas sprayed salt
on our cheeks, the blood-
red moon glowing in your
hair, tongues of soft
fire in the gentle gale
i loved you, once, when
our voices rendered apart
the air, our firehydrant
faces moist with our own
unwanted disappointments,
gleaming in summer sun
i loved you once among all of these times,
and through all times i have loved you
despite, for the time being, our time of only once
poetry
