So Justin tells me about this streaming radio site the other day... magnatune.com. So I check it out, listen to a few streams, really high-quality music, but obscure artists. So I start looking in more detail about the site, and it turns out they are the first music publisher to use the internet the way it should be used.

You can stream the music for free, listen to it in hi-fi, anywhere, anytime. You can stream any individual song, or the whole album, whatever the hell you want.

If you like the album, you can buy it and download it and own it right away. You can download it in any common format: mp3, aac, ogg, flac, even wav. Or you can buy a CD and have it mailed to you.

You can name your own price, anywhere from $5 to $18 ($8 is recommended). Half the proceeds go directly to the artist. Half. HALF!! Not $1-2, HALF THE FUCKIN PROCEEDS, and it says so right on the purchase page. The people buying the albums know this. They only NEED to pay $5 for the album, but the average amount paid for an album is almost $9. People are paying a bit more than they need to for the music, instead of stealing it. Could this be because they know that the artist is actually getting a good chunk of that money? Could it be because consumers actually want to support artists, and not the bloated recording industry? There's a good chance.

Support the artists, they do the real work
