And now that I've refreshed your memory on all the crap I've written, here's the meme that's been going around!
favorite story this year (of my own): Without question, my Bandom Big Bang, aka mafiafic, aka Three Cheers for Tyranny. It's most certainly the fic I'm the most passionate about, and I spent so much time and effort on that one--way more than I usually do. I basically have an entire notebook full of first draft scenes and flow charts and timelines and an actual color-coded family tree, and several incarnations of the mafia hierarchy as it changes throughout the story. I love it.
most popular story this year, in my opinion: I'm going to say... Three Cheers. Even though I killed a main character. I hope that was my most popular story. I want it to be. I think it deserves to be. I think it's probably the best thing I've ever written.
most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Hmm, I think Promises, Promises. Not because it was actually underappreciated (I really don't think it was), but just because it's not everyone's cup of tea, and I love it SO MUCH that I wish it was everyone's cup of tea. But it's basically skirting the boundaries of rape and it's understandable that a lot of people don't want to read their OTP like that. (But I ♥love it♥ and I am so glad that I snagged that prompt.)
most fun story: I don't know about the most fun story, but the most fun to write was Three Cheers for Tyranny, without a doubt. I've never been so involved in the preproduction of a story, and I really jumped into it with that one. I loved the whole process, even the editing. The talks about plot and character I had with
giddy_london were really awesome, and I got to chat with her in person about the ending, which I really needed.
sexiest story: Ooh, maybe Guilt, that's pretty kinky, and a lot of people liked that one (Catholic kink, nngh). Or When I Met You, You Were On Your Back, which I think is the first (and only?) pegging story I've written. That's one of my personal favorite of my sexy fics, that and Exposure. But maybe my first fic of the year, If You Want It, which is Mikey/Gerard/Frank (sort of), and my first bandom porn and everyone seemed to go crazy for it, I have no idea why. I've written a fuckton of porn, okay; I can't choose just one. I also love Promises, Promises for the serious kink.
"holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Probably anything I write with/for
philosiraptors. :P At least she makes me stick happy endings on them, othwerise they would all end in torture and despair, and nobody would want to read them but me. But I haven't posted most of the stuff I've shown her; I guess my most "wrong" public fic would probably be Promises, Promises. ...Which was written for one of her
bandom_hc prompts. hahaha
story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Hmm, I don't know. I think I have to say A Double-Bed and a Stalwart Lover, which I wrote with
giddy_london. It shifted my perceptions just through the act of writing with another person. I think that was my first major co-written fic, and we threw a lot at each other without planning it out at all, so I think the way the characters were developed in that story was really unique, compared to the stuff I write alone.
hardest story to write: Honestly? It might be my
curtainfic submission, Downtime is Our Time. It wasn't that hard to write, but it was hard to leave it there, with no angst at all. I really couldn't let it go for a while, and it seemed so pointless to me. It's definitely more of a snapshot in time rather than a story, but I guess that's okay. Most of what I write is much more plot-focused, which is why it was hard. I kept wanting to angst it up, even when I was told that it was FINE without angst. :P (I didn't have any trouble at all writing the death scene in Three Cheers, even though it kills me just like it does everyone else.)
biggest disappointment: Not finishing my NaNoWriMo fic, which is a very epic Frank/Jamia somewhat-historical-AU, working-titled "shipwreck fic". And somehow Frank/Matt (Cortez) slipped in there too, and that was unexpected awesome. I love the idea, and I love how it was turning out, but I had to give up in November. I really want to work on it again at some point. I thought of it while I was on vacation in Oregon this summer, and I kept it in my head until NaNo, and then I totally failed at making progress. :(
biggest surprise: Possibly It Turns Me On, because I'm ever so slightly squicked by needles and for some reason, I chose "piercing" as my first
kink_bingo prompt. I wish I'd been able to make it a little kinkier and sexier, but overall I'm pretty happy with how it came out, considering the fact that I can't watch when things pierce people's skin. Oh, and He Told Me I Could Never Go Back, which deals with time-travel. I never thought I'd write a time-travel fic, because it makes my brain hurt to think of paradoxes. That's why it's so vague. :P
most telling story: I don't know! Maybe The Kids Are All Fucked Up? I think there's a lot in there, in those characters, if you really pick it apart, but I'm not sure what that says about me. I don't know, though. Actually, maybe Promises, Promises. There was a comment on that one that basically said I could easily Stockholm Syndrome people into loving me. :P That fic probably says something about me, though I don't know what, exactly.
overall: My two biggies this year were Three Cheers and Promises, Promises, and they're really the only ones that went through extensive betaing. It was honestly really great because I had the best beta ever on both of them,
giddy_london. I remember being so incredibly self-conscious about them both; I just wanted everyone to love them as much as I did. I'm pretty satisfied with them, which is a great feeling to have. Anyway, this is kind of my first year writing fic in bandom; I wrote a couple of things in December of last year, but just about everything I've witten so far in this fandom has been this year. I think that's a pretty good debut, right? :) I'm pretty proud of myself.
ambitions for next year: Work my way down my WIP list and finish things. I want to do
bandombigbang next year, because that was really a lot of fun, and I hope
bandom_hc is running again as well (even though I have a few prompts I still want to work on from this year's round). I want to write more with people, because that's a little new for me starting this year, and it turns out some awesome fic/not!fic. Mostly, though, I want to finish the epic things I've started. First on my list is the You've Got Mail AU that's really close to being done, if only I can get off my ass and commit to that last handful of scenes.
Look at all that fic! I'm surprised how much I packed into this year. hahaha
