title: A Not-So-Chance Meeting
pairing: Alexis/Josh, implied Alexis/Ethan, and UST Alexis/Hunter (she's not a slut, really.)
rating: PG-13/R
summary: Alexis gets caught spying, and not for the first time
a/n: You might remember these characters from stuff I posted forever ago. Same universe. Basically, Alexis is a spy (as are Josh and Ethan and several other characters), and Hunter is the super-evil bad guy. The other ficlet (ficlets? was there more than one?) I posted can be found in my fic index.
a/n2: this was for the prompt Iceberg.
Hunter was watching Alexis with a cheery smile that belied his careful, calculated steps around the room in front of her. Alexis wished she could move out of his gaze; she was meant to be watching him, not the other way around. She wanted to disappear into the crowd, propriety be damned, but the hostess of the gala was right beside her, and she was trapped. In less than a minute, Alexis lost sight of Hunter, to her dismay, and she cast around wildly for a glimpse of his crisp, flashy suit and slick blonde hair. There were too many people around, and she couldn’t see a thing.
“Looking for someone?” the hostess, Anne, asked her politely. Alexis began to shake her head, but was interrupted by Hunter’s hand on her bare arm. His grip was surprisingly warm and gentle. He was barely holding her at all; probably a result of their present company.
“I’d like a word with Ms. Briston, if you don’t mind,” Hunter said respectfully to Anne. Alexis felt him tug her arm, but she kept smiling, to keep up her cover.
Once he’d dragged her to an empty anteroom, Alexis wrenched out of his tightening hold. “Don’t ever touch me again,” she murmured, a pleasant smile lighting her face. Now several steps away from him, she nonchalantly brushed some invisible dirt off her black trousers and straightened her sparkly top.
“What are you doing here?” Hunter growled. “You think you can spy on me?”
“Oh, haven’t we already established that I can? I thought, what with all the information you must know I’ve left in my partner’s care, that you would be more… hm, accepting of that fact.”
They started to circle each other, like tigers around the last piece of meat, but both kept up the courteous, cheerful façade. Hunter let out a low, dry laugh.
“Don’t tell me you’ve left your dear Joshua holding down the fort. You’re as good as dead, Lexie, if that’s true.”
“I’d really hate to ruin your flash suit,” she replied coldly, in response to both the nickname and the insult to Josh. At her sides, Alexis’s hands tightened into fists.
Hunter fingered the lapel of his jacket fondly. Beneath the crisp black blazer, he wore a black shirt and blackberry-purple tie with a pinstriped waistcoat to match. “I do like this outfit. And I really don’t know what you see in him, love.”
“Why do you insist on making me angry, Hunter?” Alexis asked, shaking her head in exasperation.
“Because it’s so much fun,” he replied. His lips parted in a wide, glinting smile. “I must admit, though; Joshua doesn’t hold a candle to your Ethan. It’s almost a pity I killed him.”
In a fit of passionate fury, Alexis lashed out with both hands, aiming for Hunter’s throat. An equally skilled fighter, Hunter leaned out of her trajectory and reached for her arms. She twisted away and jabbed again, this time going for his chest, but Hunter caught her by grabbing the hair at the back of her scalp. With Alexis off-guard, Hunter easily captured her wrists and twisted them together in his larger hand.
“You’re so predictable, Alexis. It’s almost boring.” Hunter twisted her left wrist, abrading her skin, but he let go of her hair. “Contrary to what you may believe, m’love, I don’t actually like hurting you. I only wish you’d see reason-”
“Because you’re such a reasonable man, right?”
“We don’t have to fight, Alexis. Rather, you don’t have to fight me.”
“That’s true,” Alexis said, as if considering his offer. “If I killed you now, there’d be nothing left for me to fight. You know what, I think you’re right. I like that plan.”
Hunter’s fingers tightened further, bruising her wrists.
“I’ll never give in to you, Hunter,” she muttered after a long silence.
“You make it so… hard… to resist ending this petty rivalry now.”
“I’d say this goes well beyond petty.”
“I do see your point. I’m not sorry, though.” Hunter sighed and, after a moment’s pause, let her go. “You know I’d keep you safe, if you came to me. You and I, we could do so much together.” He looked almost wistful as he talked.
Alexis was quiet for few long seconds. “At what price, Greg?” she whispered, something akin to desperation written on her face.
“Nothing you would truly miss, I should think,” Hunter replied pointedly.
Alexis grimaced and made for the door. “You mean no one,” she countered softly. Behind her, she knew Hunter was smiling. “I won’t let you take what I love again.”
“Taking doesn’t require consent, m’love… and you know I don’t require it.”
