Slow Motion

Mark loved the way he saw things in slow motion. Like the way Cara danced at the club.

Mark stood at the crowded bar, leaning one elbow on the stained surface. He was turned towards the dance floor, a possibly even more crowded place in the club. The strobe lights made the dancers’ movements look slow and halting to begin with, but when Mark caught sight of Cara… She glowed. She glowed and sparkled and moved. Cara wasn’t on the outskirts of the floor, but Mark could spot her through the throng of people anyway. Her blonde hair twirled in languid curls around her outstretched arms. Unlike most of the people out there, she was dancing solo, for herself and herself only. Mark saw her smile, also to herself. He took a long gulp of his drink and savored the burn he felt as it traveled down his throat. Cara looked up from the mass of people. Opened her eyes. Stared straight at him. Mark didn’t even realized he was moving until he was pushing through people to get to her. A minute later, he finally found her. She was wearing a tight black top with a spray of glitter across one shoulder. It reflected the strobe lights and flashed bright at him. Cara shook her head, soft curls flying over her shoulder. Mark slid his hands around her, clutching her hips. She pressed back into him and smiled. Everything moved in slow motion as she turned to kiss him, and Mark replayed that moment in his mind.

Mark hated the way he saw things in slow motion. Like the way Cara walked outside the club.

In the bright orange of the streetlight and neon blue of the club’s window, Cara danced. This time, she danced for him. Mark leaned against the lamppost and grinned at her. She twirled around in time with her own unheard music and reached for his hand. Mark let her pull him into her dance floor. He ignored the ignorant passersby. What did they know about love, anyway? As they slid in and out of the bright circle of light, Mark reveled in the harsh shadows across Cara’s face. He kissed her neck softly, and she arched against him, pulling at his loosened, purely decorative tie. But then she was pulling away, pulling him with her, as if his tie was a leash and collar around his neck. Her laughter filled the night air. She started to cross the street, a noticeable bounce in her step. Mark hurried across to the other side before her. He turned back to watch her walk-dance-toward him. Cara twirled again, sparkling in the light of… headlights. The bright whiteblue glow suddenly surrounded her. She turned to look, and Mark dove forward, ignoring the screech of the tires. But everything moved in slow motion, and Mark couldn’t stop replaying that moment in his mind.
