...not that I'm expecting anyone to read this, but the following contains spoilers about Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series and Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon, just in case someone is an extreme spoilerphobe. (I'm really, really not.)
Over the last few weeks, I've noticed an alarming trend in my reading habits: trying not to cry in public over fictional characters. The first time it really hit home that this had become an issue was when I was reading City of Ashes in the supermarket and holding tears back over Simon.1 /o\
Then of course, bright and early today I was actually crying on page 311 of His Majesty's Dragon2 because of Levitas. On the bus. At 9:43am. I had to dig out the pack of tissues I never use from the bottom of my purse.
I thought this was a low point for me until, oh, 2:30pm when I was blinking back tears furiously 3/4 through City of Glass.3 While waiting for the train. So yes, I've decided to keep track of this sort of thing, just to see how often I am in this situation. (And as encouragement to keep track of what I'm reading and comment on it further than just updating Shelfari.)
In conclusion:
IT'S BEEN 0 DAYS SINCE I CRIED OVER FICTIONAL PEOPLE (IN PUBLIC).
1. I could care less about Clary and Jace in this book, but the "side" characters' troubles kill me dead. Ask me how how I feel about Alec, Luke, Isabelle or omg Simon.
2. A++ Would cry over again.
3. Max!!
