So Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who. I wish I was sad, I wish I could 'mourn' him, but the truth is I never felt anything towards his Doctor. Now, that's probably down to poor writing more than anything else, but his characterisation of the Doctor never clicked with me on any level. I, quite simply, found him incredibly annoying.
But one of my favourite things about Doctor Who has always been that we eventually get someone new. A new interpretation, a new personality. Whilst I didn't enjoy Matt Smith's stint, I'm looking forward to the, hopefully, drastic transition between his Doctor and the next one and what that will do to the show as a whole.
Which is why I've made a list of who I'd love to see get the role~
13. Alexander Siddig
Alex played Doctor Julian Bashir in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, so he's already familar with the sci-fi world. Which, personally, is something I think you sort of need to understand if you're going to take on something as huge as being the next Doctor. He'd handle it with grace, warmth and genuine interest. And I love he's a little older as well.
12. Alice Lowe
I'm kind of surprised that Alice isn't more well known, after all, she's been in a lot of highly rated stuff. But then again, she usually stars in cult hits rather than mainstream ones. Regardless, Doctor Who would definitely suit her and I'd love to see her get the recognition she deserves.
11. Damien Molony
I was a little iffy about putting Damien on this list as I've only ever seen him in Being Human, but I reckon he'd be a good choice if they insist on carrying down the whole young, attractive white male route. Which seems likely... But yeah, Damien's at the top of my list if that's the case.
10. Rufus Jones
Ok, putting aside I have the hugest crush on this man, he would honestly be amazing. Seriously. Like Alice, he deserves so much more praise for his acting skills and certainly deserves bigger roles.
9. Meera Syal
Because she's fab and sassy and crazy clever and hilarious.
8. Sue Perkins
First and foremost, she already looks the part. Secondly, I can really imagine her being a good stepping stone into a more progressive version of the Doctor. She's likeable, kooky and cute much in the same way David Tennant and Matt Smith's respective Doctors came across but, gasp, a woman! I think Sue would make the transition simpler and ease many of the completely unfounded fears some would undoubtedly have about a female Doctor.
7. Olivia Colman
Tbh, I feel like Olivia should be an obvious choice as the new Doctor. A female Doctor is waaaay over due and Olivia has proven time after time she can act in pretty much any genre and do whatever character she's playing justice.
6. Matthew Macfadyen
I can easily picture him having the same sort of vibe as Paul McGann's Doctor. Which I'd be all for seeing as we never got enough of the 8th Doctor. In fact, if he dressed like his character in Ripper Street (see the photo above I used), I think he'd be doubly brilliant.
5. Tom Hollander
I really, really want a Doctor that's a little older - like they often used to be - and I think Tom is endearing enough to capture the viewers hearts despite not being 'relatable' to younger viewers. I mean, he's ridiculously sweet in Rev (which is fantastic, by the way, do check it out).
4. Reece Shearsmith
In all honesty, I would actually prefer him as the Master because I think his aura and personality fits that role a little better but I still think he'd made a fab Doctor as well. I mean, can you imagine the amazing input he'd have on the show as a whole? Darker, weirder episodes with genuinely interesting concepts. Because, after all, there's no way he'd be able to stay out of the writing process.
Basically, I don't want another fluffy, quirky Doctor. I kind of want a bastard. Someone who's troubled and a little grumpy, but in an entirely different way to what we've seen in the past.
3. Idris Elba
He seems to be quite a popular casting choice amongst online fans and I can't help but agree. He's a fabulous actor and is utterly gorgeous. What more could you want? I don't even really have much more to add than that, haha.
2. Julia Davis
I love this lady. I'd even go as far as to say she's currently England's funniest and most talented woman by a fucking long way.
1. Richard Ayoade
Richard is my #1 choice without a doubt. He's funny, creative, intelligent... I feel like he'd bring a much needed touch of class and imagination to Doctor Who that is so desperately needed at the moment. I've been a fan of his for years and it'd bring me so much joy to see him breathe life into something I no longer love as much as I used to. And I have every confidence that he could so spectacularly.
And those are my choices! If Jessica Hynes hadn't already been in Doctor Who as a relatively important character she'd definitely be on this list. As would Victoria Coren and Charlie Brooker if they were actually actors... Hell, was tempted to stick David Mitchell in there too but as much as I'd love him as the Doctor, I just couldn't make it work realistically in my head for some reason. Same goes for Simon Farnaby, Julian Barratt, and Ben Willbond who I'd all be a 100% behind landing the role.
Of course, Moffat needs to go before I'm truly happy. Even merely thinking of him writing for any of these wonderful people makes me cringe.
