When the girl returned, however, her aspect had entirely changed. For one thing, she wore the smug, sated expression of someone who has just acquired a very tasty, nutritious supper for very little money. "2,000 won!" she said. "That's less than two dollars... I think. Anyway, if you eat it in the restaurant, they give you kimchi and pickled radishes for free-- sometimes you get soup, too!" She smiled. "And even though I had to top it off with an ice cream cone-- it's kind of a tradition-- I still feel quite virtuously healthy."

She proceeded to describe an afternoon and evening spent in Seoul with a friend, wherein a tiresome (but not entirely useless) lecture presented by her employers had been succeeded by a pleasant meal and a visit to Deoksugung Palace. The exhibit on display at the art museum there-- one she had meant to view for quite some time-- had been a selection of paintings from the Hapsburg collection at Austria's Kunsthistoriches Museum.

Parting company with her friend after coffee, the girl had proceeded in the general direction of Gwanghwamun Station. On the way, however, she had been distracted by the sight of an enormous sculpture lit for the evening, and then by the lights and beauty of the Cheonggyechon by night. It was some time before she finally made her way into the station, and thence homeward to Gimpo.
