Title With family like this, who needs enemies?
"Daddy!" Aline ran into the kitchen, a picture in hand. "Are we visiting Grandpa and grandma?"
Will turned from the oven, oven mitts in hand. "We will, " He noticed the picture. "Oh, what did you draw?" She passed it to him and he paused. "A bunny rabbit?"
"No! It's Jesus, see? He's rising from the dead!" We learnt that Jesus came back to life in three days." She sounded excited. "The cross is behind him. Papa said the picture was awsum..."
What are they teaching children in kindergarten these days? He thought. I wouldn't want a child to be reminded of dead people.
"Why did you draw him rising out of an egg?"
"You have to have eggs on Easter, silly." Aline replied, she tugged his pants. "Will Aunty Kat be over?"
"I think so," Will said still looking at the picture, still wondering why she drew Jesus
rising out of an egg. "Go and play with papa. Daddy's making biscuits."
"Okay." She took the picture from him and trotted off.
"Today with your family and tomorrow mine." Adrian was saying as he parked on the curb. "My mum keeps complaining, that she doesn't see her grandchild often." He pulled the handbrake and turned off the engine.
"She likes the company, as everyone has moved out." Will shrugged. "I mean how many siblings do you have again? Six. Six. It's wonder, your mum would miss children running around the house." He unbuckled his seat belt and opened the door. "I thought David and were married?"
"He works interstate and is overseas. Kelly's still at home and there's Francis. " Adrian reminded, before turning round. "Aline, wear your jacket, it might cold."
"Will! You're here." He let himself be hugged and squeezed, at the same time thinking, I hope the cake will be fine. "Where have you been? You haven't been visiting me lately."
"I been busy mum," He replied as she kissed his cheek and he repeated the gesture. "Happy Easter mum. We brought a cake and some wine."
"Happy Easter," His mother beamed. "Where's little Aline?"
"Happy Easter nanna!" Aline appeared from behind him, jumping to hug her.
He stepped aside to let Adrian greet his mum. As always he was wary of how his mum would act. Unlike Adrian's parents, who had been aware of their son's sexual orientation, and had been supportive throughout his life. His parents on the other hand, were hesitant and rather uncertain. He could still remember how his parents had reacted when he told them in first year uni. His mum had cried and his dad stayed silent. Maybe it was to be expected, he knew that he had been a mummy's boy. Him and Derrick. What mother would want her child to be gay? Katherine didn't talk to him for a week, which had hurt. More than anything he had wished for Derrick to be still alive.
Will noticed the look Aline gave his mother before she returned to Adrian's side, grabbing his hand. He saw Adrian look down and give a small smile as if to reassure her.
"Adrian," His mother said, arms placed at her sides. "How are you?"
"Mrs Black," Adrian greeted. "I been well. I hope you been good."
"Oh, I been well." She replied. "I am glad you seem well."
"Mum," Will warned, noting how uncomfortable Aline looked.
"Happy Easter Adrian," She said before turning away and walking to the kitchen. "Come you two, everyone's nearly here."
"Happy Easter, Mrs Black." Adrian replied to a disappearing back.
Will let out a sigh and patted Adrian's shoulder in apology as they followed her.
"Sorry, I thought she would be over this by now."
"I don't blame her, I'm used to it." Adrian said. "After awhile, you can't help but get used to it. Especially after friends of your mates do the same back then." He looked down. "What's wrong Aline? You want me to carry you? Can you hold the wine?"
"You're getting old Aline," Will tsked tsked as Adrian picked her up, and smiled as she stuck her tongue at him.
They walked into the kitchen and found Catherine and his mum getting the food ready.
"Will," Katherine noticed him, removed her oven mitts and went over to hug him, mindful of the cake and wine he was holding.
"Happy Easter sis," He kissed her cheek. "Do you need help?"
She shook her head. "We're almost ready." She looked over his shoulder. "Hi Adrian." She gave him a hug and pinched Aline's cheek. "Hello,"
Katherine looked at both of them before she leaned towards him.
"How was mum?" She whispered, taking the cake and wine off him.
"Better," Will lied. "I can't complain right?"
"She's old, that's all." Katherine sighed giving him a comforting pat. "Dad's in the living room with Richard. The girls are outside. You guys relax and we will be done soon."
"Sure, will do." Will gave her a reassuring pat and smiled to ease her worried smile. "Come Adrian."
Will bit back a sigh as he left the kitchen with Adrian. The Easter lunch hadn't even started and he already wished he was home.
"Will we have an egg hunt later?" Aline tugged at Adrian's sleeve.
"Later," Adrian said mildly. "If your father still has some sanity left."
