National Blog Posting Month

Nov 01, 2008 14:12

I can never do NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) because I have finals in November (edit: I just wrote "February" there.  No idea why).  I just heard about NaBloPoMo, and this sounds much easier to juggle with school.  The only rule is that I have to write one post a day for 30 days.  I think I can do that!

I'm going to challenge myself by trying to write something interesting.  No posts solely whining about homework or asking for egg clicks (the latter probably doesn't count as a post anyway).  I'm not going to try to stick to a theme because I don't think I can do thirty days on a single topic, although I imagine that I'm probably going to go back to doing a lot of book reviews.

Today, I think I'm going to be slightly lazy and do an intro post to start things off.  You all know me, or have read my intro posts before, so I'm going to challenge myself to write new information (except for those of you who know me in real life.  It's hard to stump you with new information).

To start off, my name is Rachael.  I was named after a character on a television show (no idea which one).  My mother thought she was being unique.  So did millions of other mothers.  My roommate is named Rachel.  The is endlessly amusing to us.  Also, neither of us have nicknames, all the better to confuse people with.

I was born on Election Day.  I used to think this was cool, until I met Rachel, who was born on Halloween (coolest birthday ever).  We're both turning 21 this week, and we're excited about being legal even though neither of us drink.

I am a creative writing major.  This seemed like a good idea when I was a high school senior.  It's still a lot of fun, but I'm starting to worry about how I'm going to be able to afford my cardboard box, so I'm taking a second major in professional writing.

Nothing life-altering or earth-shattering has ever happened to me.  I am afraid that as soon as all that bad luck catches up to me, it's going to be huge and horrible.

I grew up in the country, and I moved to a university town that is buried in cornfields.  As a result I am very uncomfortable in cities, and it took me until junior year of college before I could cross a road without sprinting (Oh my God, I'm walking on the road!  Cars drive on the road!  Quick, get to safety!).

I hate winter with a passion.  I thought I was tough, living on the outer edges of the Snow Belt, but then I moved to the flattest part of Ohio and found out that ice-cold winds are even worse than blizzards.  Also, I have a bad hip from falling on the freaking ice last year and I really resent it.  How hard is it to salt a sidewalk?  They sprinkle like a handful of blue salt on every sidewalk and think that it will magically make the slipperness disappear.  *clears throat* Um, as I was saying, I hate winter.  And ice.  And my school's inability to keep the campus safe and accessible.

I had a really interesting childhood (mostly due to the interesting people I hung out with) and I should blog about it more often.  I've thought about writing it all down before, I but I can't decide if it would make a good narrative.  I think the individual anecdotes might be entertaining, though.

This might be helpful for all of you.  Here is a cast of characters who I often write about:

Friends at college:
Rachel--my roommate and best friend at school.  She's Pagan, disabled, and obsessed with zombies.
Lauren-from-school--my other closest friend here.  She's Lutheran, a band geek, and likes to laugh at Twilight with me.
Katy--my roommate from freshman year.  She's a pharmacy major who is always happy.
Beth--Rachel's ex-roommate.  Vegetarian biology major.

The Crew (close friends from home):
Lauren-from-home/spadztastic --scarily similar to Lauren-from-school in many ways.
Zoey--so much like Rachel that I used to call them by each other's names freshman year of college.  She's an archaeology major, which is awesome.
Katie/wordmagekat --entirely unlike Katy-from-school in nearly every way.  Thanks for breaking the trend, Kat!
KK--a few years older than the rest of us.  Is going to grad school in Chicago.
James--was the token guy in our group for many years
Sam--going into the military
Dan--my little brother, who somehow weaseled all of my friends into liking him enough to let him join The Crew (they were my friends first!  Mine!)

Edit:  Since I've been posting about Jessica without ever introducing her...  Jessica's dad and mine went to high school together, so we've been friends since we were babies (born six months apart).  She didn't go to our school and wasn't part of The Crew, but most of them know her.  Jill is her mom.

That's all I have for now!  I hope I don't bore you terribly for the next 30 days!
