Notes or Warnings: for my lovely friend kelsey, to which i owe everything

You smile tersely and in your eyes rest my holy kingdom of gilded bravery. I want to trace the outline of your lips as you frown in concentration over smatterings of blood on your apron and hands. I see everything through you, a filter of dread and belated hope, and in the night the stars seem to be hung from strings on God’s fingers when I think of you. One night I did reach for one, twinkling like the flecks of autumn in your summer’s irises, and as I did, God pulled the string back. I remained with boots to the frozen ground, wishing I had indulged in your chocolat.

Now, though, I understand why your fingernails always have bitter edges. I am seeing you, frayed like I never thought you could be. I want to be able to walk over the icy moat between us, whispering a foreign language in its native land. I want to spit out the acidic taste of war and find home somewhere in the remnants of both of us, puzzles and puzzled as to why we are here in the first place. I want to rest my hand on your knee, placating, understanding why you wish to never see blood again.

You say you are not blessed but I look at you and I know the symptoms of a weary hero on a divine mission.

Your hair falls like rays of sunlight I haven’t seen for weeks, captured in a braided bun of labor and stress. The way your voice shapes around my stilted language is an art that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and I feel privileged to be in your company. The cold that always clings to my bones subsides when I hear you say my name. You are inspiring and bewildering, and I know where I am but there is nothing beyond it. I am lost in what I am compared to what you are, and I feel a rush of compulsive thievery to take your hand.

A quiet pause overtakes us, the laments of war wax in lieu of silence.

We have been sitting on storage crates while I know I love you.
