I am but a nimble willower in your begotten prose, nestled within a single syllable and a breath, and I am in your debt for the service you have granted me. Privileged with the feeling of hearing your mouth surround my name; I am brave enough to die for a cause that serves me nothing, and to live a brief gallantry in lieu of shame. I was a coward, and you held the means to which I’d learn otherwise between your two petal pink lips, sealing the wisdom behind your teeth and past the ridges of your voice. I hear it now, though, the lilting accent and responsive shock of respect I feel that is engrained in me now and forever.

I stand and take aim, eyes blinking so rapidly I fire blind, tears sealed within my withering cowardice. I know I don’t hit anything with the first clip of six, despite the relative autumn hunt of retreating enemy; there is no feeling of torn flesh or pride, the projectiles only functioning as added commotion to the cacophony the engagement. I still hear your voice over the din, a tone with a propensity for convincing any soldier he was a god, and I know the purpose of it, I am reloading at an inhuman speed.

You continue your encouragement, basic phrases as you fire from your hip, and I continue my war until I’ve got three bullets left in my cartridge. You leave to spew more truthful lies you believe in to more men along the line, and I watch your boots kick up dust in your wake. A stone catches the light before it hits the ground, and I inhale the air I’ve been withholding from myself.

I steel again, and fire a last shot, exhaling as it bursts blood from the back of a German. It is a satisfying sight to see him crumple as I had just learned to stand, because of you. He is human and I am human, but I am an evolved form of soldier, newly minted and genuine in all my fear’s motivation to cancel my doubts. He is dirt and I am clay. Affected as I am by his misfortune, a burden dives from my shoulders into the thick, red rivers of war. I have done my duty to destroy a man before one destroys me.
