Pet Peeve of the Day

Living in Canada means experiencing many things that those outside of this lovely country may find slightly odd, including (but by no means limited to) French and English labels on all products. Lately, I have noticed a trend in which 'SANS GLUTEN FREE' often appears upon said labels; whenever I see it, twitching ensues.

'Sans' is a slut of a word that functions in both official languages, rather like the word 'gluten', which apparently does not require explanation. I use it frequently (and delight in highlighting my use of it with a somewhat pretentious French accent). There is absolutely no need to add 'free' to the end of the phrase for it to make sense to anyone over the age of eight, at which point they are forced to take French classes and will learn the meaning of the word.

Packages that say 'SANS GLUTEN FREE' destroy the bits of my soul not already on their way into hell. If I ever meet the person who designed the labels, I will bludgeon them to death with the sans gluten food that I henceforth refuse to purchase.

general stupidity, rant
