This was originally a response to a post and I thought that it might make a great rant. When you look at some of the things that are currently in the news it makes you wonder what was, what is, and what will be years from now. I read so often about your health system over there, and how people with bipolar struggle because they cannot take the meds they need as it's not covered by their health scheme, or cannot see a different psychiatrist as they are not covered either, or even worse cannot see anyone or take anything because they have no health cover.
Here in Australia EVERYONE with a low income pays only $4.70 per item on a prescription. We can see any doctor we want and most often it's free (bulkbilled to the government). We can see any psychiatrist we want and quite often it's free too, bulkbilled to the government.
My MIL was over visiting recently and commented on how amazing our roads are - they are in good repair.
I could go on and on with the list. I do not intend to gloat about how great my country is - it has its faults.
But it also has its priorities - attending to the needs of its citizens. The people of this country come first.
I am not quite as ignorant of the USA as most aussies because my partner is a former Californian. Over the years I have known her I have listened to what she has had to say about her country. It seems to me that its priorities have gotten out of focus, that its political ambitions are causing it to over-reach itself, spending money on huge out of country expenses while people at home are doing without things that should be essential.
It reminds me of a young tree that grows too fast and too high. It becomes top heavy and sooner or later in a big storm will simply collapse, it's roots too shallow and trunk too weak to support the myriad branches it has grown. It is out of balance. It cannot help but fall sooner or later.
It seems to me there needs to be some re-prioritising done that lets the needs of the citizens be considered, rather than the egos of the politicians.
