It took a while to get my income sorted out, despite only having one employer last year, and then I was able to work out that I should get a tax refund. Great! NZ$720 would be pretty handy in my current state as penniless student. I couldn't log on to the Inland Revenue site, and so I went in to their Dunedin office because I wanted to talk to a human and pick up the form. But no, the form is only available online. I explained that I was in a vicious cycle; the password wasn't recognised but I could not change it because I was already registered, and for that I needed the password that didn't work. I was told to phone the 'telephone help', about which I can say that one word is correct, and that word is 'telephone'. The word 'help' does not seem true. It seems that around tax time the number of phone calls goes up, and so it is more difficult. Wow, you are kidding. Do you mean, like, tax year comes around every year? And like, heaps of people, like, try to log on to get their tax refunds? Wow, every year. Amazing.
So I tried various numbers and finally managed t get to talk to someone who said that the network was down. Amazing; half the country is trying to submit tax bills and the network goes down.
All I want is a form, but you can't get it from the office anymore.
I guess the government is trying to keep its money. But the money is from me overpaying my income tax. So it is not the government's money, but mine. And I could do with it.
Still, I can try again later.
