« No risk, no fun

Hyukjae isn't sure why the police is standing in their doorway asking to be let in. It's in the middle of the night already and he asks himself if his brother has finally gone mad and gotten himself into something he could easily have avoided. To his surprise they ask him if his father has ever been violent towards him.

He feels his hands starting to sweat, the lights becoming too bright and the room losing its space. Hyukjae stumbles on his own words a couple of times and tries to put his father's habit into a brighter light. I've only been hit once he explains, being well aware of his own lie. I guess he had a bad day already and thing have just piled up and somehow gotten out of hand. It was nothing really he tries to convince them.

One of the officers writes down what Hyukjae is saying while the other tells him that it's just a routine question and that he should feel comfortable and tell the truth. Hyukjae still doesn't know what the police is doing in his room but he explains what has happened once more before they go back into the living room where his mother is waiting.

Hyukjae isn't the type of person to eavesdrop on others' conversations but it bothers him that his mother has been talking to the police for twenty minutes already when their appearance should have been just a quick checkup they claimed to do. When he's about to leave, one of the officers mentions Donghae's name and his feet automatically drag him into the direction of his mother until he's standing in the living room himself.

Their conversation ends with the arrival of Hyukjae. The police officers thank for their cooperation and tell his mother that they will call if there is any improvement in their case. Which case? asks Hyukjae when they finally have left. His mother fixes the hem of her shirt and sighs. Hyukjae she says, her fingers massaging her temples go to sleep, this isn't something you should be involved in.

Hyukjae stares at her, trying to comprehend what she has told him. When the information finally sinks in he cannot suppress a mocking laughter. Everything was going wrong lately and his mother telling him to calmly go to sleep when he was obviously involved in it already was way too amusing to not laugh about it.

Look he says after calming down the police stood in my room about an hour ago asking me if my father has ever become violent, they have interviewed you for half an hour when a routine should just take minutes to be done with, it's in the middle of the night and I'm a god damn grown-up. If something is going on stop hiding it from me like a little kid who has done something wrong and can't his parents. While Hyukjae continues to scold her further he notices that his mother is neither looking or listening to him. She is looking right past him, out of the window, the one which is facing the street. What are you looking at? he scoffs before turning around and facing the window too.

Hyukjae's soul almost jumps out of his body when he notices somebody staring back at them. It's his father all dressed in black looking like a criminal who has just broken out of jail. Close the door! his mother orders, her eyes never leaving the window. Hyukjae silently obeys, scared by the sudden change of atmosphere. When the door is finally locked he starts to look at the both of them. If he wasn't imagining things his mother was panicking, her eyes filling with fear. If he hasn't gone home by tomorrow call the police she says and don't let him in, by no means! still observing the person she once loved.

The window seems to turn into a display window. Hyukjae feels trapped, like an animal in a zoo. His father is constantly mouthing something but he is sure that it is not something about the closed door. He wasn't asking them to open him. It feels more like a silent threat and his conclusions turn real when his father fogs the window with his breath, writing a clear 'I'll get you whore' onto it before stepping into the darkness he had come from again.

Suddenly Hyukjae feels like he has gone back in time when he had heard his parents fight in the kitchen, when Donghae had checked up on them and when he had been comforted by the same guy. He felt so dumb for always being the one who just sat around and got played with. Why was Donghae taking all the initiatives and why was he still being the passive one? The decision was made. He would talk to his mother the day after and if she didn't want to talk he would tell the police about what had happened right in front of his eyes. He shot a picture of the threat, just in case and ran into his room leaving his mother behind.

Sleep doesn't come upon Hyukjae early enough so he keeps tossing around in his bed, letting out sounds of frustration and almost damaging his brain by thinking too much, accidentally hitting his head against the wall. He wonders if Donghae is still up and if he should call him but when he gazes at the clock the number four practically jumps into his face, mocking him about his lack of sleep. The day had been full of events and he suddenly starts to feel bad about having to stop in the middle of their act.

There is this sudden urge to call Donghae once more and to secretly meet him even if it had to be in some dirty corner somewhere in the city or a shady rundown house. He decides against it though and settles on a simple textmessage, effortlessly trying to close his eyes and enter dreamland. When he gazes at the clock again he sees an eight smiling at him, the sunshine reflecting on the clock's glass.

Hyukjae rubs his eyes and massages his shoulders which are too tense for his liking. He slips into his pants, puts his shirt on and cringes when he smells his socks. The odour is awful and he is glad that Donghae doesn't have some kind of kinky foot-fetish. An image pops up in his mind and he can literally see his brother flying miles away to never reek that unpleasant smell again.

Biting into a toast he tries to put one of his socks one. He's glad when he catches himself from falling onto the floor, his mother must have moped it just recently. Mom? he calls out with a full mouth. His mother slaps him from behind and almost makes him choke on the bite he had taken. What are you doing? she says, going back to wiping the table which Hyukjae has dirtied with the toast-crumbs. What was the real reason for the divorce? he asks causing her to halt for a moment. She goes back to wiping the table again, somehow faster now, probably to get away from her son's question. There are things you shouldn't know about your father she says, walking straight to the sink, not looking at Hyukjae at all. Is that the reason why the police was here yesterday? he replies, taking the last bite of his toast.

Misses Lee closes the water tap, one of her hands still resting on it and the other holding onto the edge of the kitchen counter. Her head hangs low to hide the tears she's been trying to suppress since Hyukjae had started the conversation. He raped me she whispers, screaming it out in the end finally letting go of the one thing she had tried to hide. W-What? Hyukjae says. He feels the bubble he's been living in burst. He always thought he was the only one in the family who had to deal with crap but it never even crossed his mind that something like that could have happened to his mother.

He runs out, typing another message to Donghae which reads 'I need to talk to you urgently, meet me at the front gate of your school'. Hyukjae climbs up the wall and sits down on it, swinging his feet around. He notices the cold once more, it indeed was winter already.

He waits and waits and waits and Donghae never arrives, not even after waiting for four hours straight. His hands are freezing already but even though he has pushed them into the pockets of his jacket as deep as he can the warmth just doesn't want to come. When Hyukjae jumps off the wall and walks a few feet away he suddenly hears somebody panting behind him. He turns around just in time for Donghae to hug him with a stupid smile on his face. I love you Donghae says against Hyukjae's neck who is hugging him harder.

Donghae screams out when Hyukjae presses against one of his two broken rips. Since when have you become so fragile? Hyukjae jokes until he notices the bruises on Donghae's face. He feels him up and slows down when he reaches his lover's bandaged upper body. Oh my God Hyukjae manages to breath out when he notices the blood stains on it. Oh my God he repeats once more, looking at Donghae with horror written all over his face. The latter pushes the hands off of him and smiles at Hyukjae. It's not one that reflects happiness, it's a smile which should tell him that there was nothing to be done about what had happened already.

Donghae doesn't let go of Hyukjae when he starts to cry against his neck. His brother has always been a crybaby, too good and innocent for this world. He drags him into the nearest café only noticing his brother's freezing hands now. Hyukjae has calmed down by the time he's sipping on a cup of hot chocolate. What did you want to talk about? Donghae asks when Hyukjae seems to be in a state again in which he can properly tell what has happened. The other takes out his cellphone once more, too scared to let those few words slip out of his mouth, ans types another message. Donghae frowns until he has received the message. Our mom got raped....by dad it says causing Donghae to go numb.
