Makeup post! Drugstore Favorites

Feb 15, 2013 13:24

(Plus some bonus YSL and my Feb 2013 Popsugar box! Warning! This post is very picture heavy.)

Today, I have some drugstore lovelies to share with you. Some I've had for awhile (the balm stains and lip butters), and some are newer.

When talking about makeup, I generally think that there are items where you should ONLY go high-end (eyeshadow!), and then items where there's not much difference between the high-end brands and their drugstore brethren. Mascara usually falls into this category (Maybelline makes some of the best mascara on the market, perfectly comparable to Diorshow, imo).

If you'd have asked me a few months ago, I would have scoffed at the idea that there'd be a cream eyeshadow that would hold up to high-end versions. MAC's Paint Pots have been generally well-regarded since their release, and Benefit's have also gotten high marks. Then came Maybelline. They accomplished two pretty remarkable feats with their release of their 24 Hour Tattoo by Eyestudio cream eyeshadow line: one, this stuff is actually pretty damn fantastic for $6, and two, the color range has some colors that you usually only see in some of the riskier high-end lines, like MUFE, Illamasqua, or Urban Decay. Like, there's a FUCHSIA. Fuchsia. Anyhow, when I saw these on 1/2 price sale at Rite Aid, I pounced.

Clockwise from top:
Audacious Asphalt, Inked In Pink, Tenacious Teal, Tough as Taupe, Fuchsia Fever.

Tenacious Teal - More of a blue than a teal.

Fuchsia Fever - A blue-based fuchsia.

Audacious Asphalt - Gunmetal.
(Fellow dancers! Take Note!)

Tough As Taupe - A cool greyish brown

Inked In Pink - Metallic Ice Pink

Okay, so cream shadow can be used in a couple of ways. It can be used on its own for a quick wash of color, which is how I used it here:

Inner Corner: Inked In Pink. Rest of lid: Tough as Taupe.

You can apply it with either brushes or fingers. Considering the only time I'd wear it on its own would be if I were applying a 5-minute makeup, I went with fingers here just to see what I could do. And although Tough as Taupe was too cool-toned for me to use as a lid wash, I was really impressed with the texture. It has a sort of silicone-y feel, with good slip, but it sets after about two minutes.

The second way you can use a cream shadow is as a primer of sorts. You can use them as a base to enhance your powder eyeshadow and make it last longer. I used it this way, too, with really impressive results (you can see it in my Valentine's Day look later). Powder shadows blended beautifully on top of them, and lasted all day long without creasing on me or my color fading. Now, I should note that there have been a few shades in this line that have gotten less-glowing reviews from other beauty bloggers, but overall the line is a breakthrough for drugstore makeup. I do wish they had a warm brown, but as they periodically release LE additions, maybe they'll add one. I also liked the packaging-- you get a lot of product for your buck, and in a hefty glass pot that's sturdy and smooth.

Next up are products you've heard me talk about before: The Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters and the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. Both were released last year with much fanfare. The first is a truly moisturizing, totally unscented tinted lip balm, akin to the Maybelline Baby Lips or the Burts Bees lip tints. They come in so many colors. The second are drugstore versions of the Clinique Chubby Sticks and Tarte Lipsurgence Stains, and I think Covergirl just released their own version.

Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters - Red Velvet, Sugar Plum, Pink Truffle, Peach Parfait

Pink Truffle - A 'My Lips But Better' shade of very neutral pink.

Peach Parfait - A peachy pink shade close to Pink Truffle, but with subtle golden shimmer.

Sugar Plum - A very wearable sheer mauve.

Red Velvet - An amazingly pigmented darker red.

I didn't take lip swatches of these guys, but if you haven't read my past review-- these guys are not lipsticks. They will not last through lunch. You will have to reapply them. But the major pro is that with few exceptions (Red Velvet being an exception), they're so sheer you can do it without a mirror, like chapstick. They're nice for low-key makeup, just to look finished and put together. Sugar Plum is my BFF.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain - Smitten and Honey

Honey - A 'My Lips But Better' neutral pink

Smitten - bright pink, leans cool.

These guys are subtly glossy colors meant to moisturize, then leave a stain once the gloss wears off. It's been my experience that this is only ever true of the brighter or darker colors, high end or not. Like their very expensive Tarte cousins, these have a pleasant minty scent. They last longer than the lip butters, but I wouldn't call them long-wearing. Maybe 3-4 hours or so before you'll need to reapply.

Honey is a no-brainer color if you're pale, it's the type of color that keeps you from looking washed out while requiring little maintenance. Smitten is a pop of color that brightens. I took lip swatches, but disregard that it looks a little patchy-- I'm still figuring out how to swatch staining lip products, and the various stains I swatched built up on some of the drier patches of my lips. I do not have application problems with this product.

Next, I'm testing a new drugstore dupe vs a universally-lauded (and stupidly expensive) lip formula. You guys have heard me praise the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres (aka, glossy stains) before. Since December, I've gone through about half of my #4 Mauve Fusain. This stuff is the everlast of glossy lip stuff. Even the lighter colors stay on forever. recently acquired #29 Rose Forreau. It was an intense lemming, and I could barely sleep without owning it. IDK, sometimes you just become convinced that a new lipstick can be life-changing.

YSL Glossy Stains - #4 Mauve Fusain and #29 Rose Forreau

#4 Mauve Fusain

#4 Mauve Fusain - A mauve-y raisin color.

#29 Rose Forreau

#29 Rose Forreau - A shade shifter that starts off light coral, almost pastel, then deepens to a a lit-from-within pinky coral.

You know that color that ladies' lips always seem to be in Jane Austen adaptations? Or the color Keira Knightley's lips seem to naturally be? That's Rose Forreau. It's a wonderful liminal color that's not pink nor peach nor coral, but some indefinable and unique mix of the three that is GORGEOUS. You'll see a full-face swatch later with my Valentine's Day makeup.

So, L'oreal's dupes of the YSL glossy stains recently launched in drugstores. There are 12 shades. Most are pinks. There is one lone red, and it's a pinky red. So-- the color range is a little disappointing-- imo, most ranges should include at least 3 reds. It's definitely far more tame than YSL's line, which is why I am lemming YSL's #9 Rouge Laque so badly still. But what I did snap up for $8 apiece, I really do like.

L'Oreal Colour Caresse Wet Stain - Infinite Fuchsia, Lilac On and On, Endless Red

Infinite Fuchsia

Infinite Fuchsia - A slightly cool bright fuchsia

Lilac On and On

Lilac On and On - The sheerest shade I've tried. Less of a lilac and more of a cool pink. Very natural looking.

Endless Red

Endless Red - A cherry red.
The patchiness here is not the fault of the product, but my swatching (as I'd already swatched several dark stains previously). Of the lip products swatched, this one was by far the most staining, however.

L'Oreal Wet Stains: Endless Red, Lilac On and On, Infinite Fuchsia
YSL Glossy Stains: #29 Rose Forreau, #4 Mauve Fusain

In my opinion, the wear of the L'Oreal lipsticks is very comparable to the YSL ones. They are practically the same product, with the exception that they start out sheerer, although the more colorful shades can be built up to full opacity. I did a few FOTD's with them so you can see.

Infinite Fuchsia on the day I was taking baby steps into learning how to contour.

I also tried a sock bun. LOOK AT THAT THING. Next time: smaller sock.

To give you an idea of wear, this is Infinite Fuchsia after 4 hours that included brunch and several cups of coffee.

This segues nicely into my next product, because I used it in my Valentine's Day makeup with some of the other stuff I've swatched. Maybelline is great for mascara. My current favorite mascara is their Falsies Flared formula (though, do not mix them up and grab the regular Falsies formula... clump city!). As it turns out, just as I had run low on my FF and was almost out of my deluxe sample of Diorshow, I came across Gouldylox Reviews' take on their newest mascara offering. Stupid name aside (really? "Volum'"?!), I decided to try it out.

Maybelline Rocket Volum' Express Mascara

Maybelline Rocket Volum' Express Mascara

Talk about a weird wand. I was a bit skeptical. But it totally works! I got amazing coverage in one coat. Now, my lashes are already pretty long, so I don't need a lengthening mascara, but if you want longer-looking lashes minus those weird micro-fiber thingers, this might be good for you to try. It was not the plushest volume-wise, but I would say it was better than average. The wand made for piece-y, separated lashes that were artfully spikey. Like, that spikey look that's so in right now, not, say, Tammy Faye Baker. I don't think this is going to be my HG mascara (that's still Falsies Flared), but I will say it's a good mascara in general. Didn't flake on me at all, either.

Here's a look I did with it:

(Also, omg, time to do my roots!)

Close up on the eye. I used Aromaleigh over Maybelline Color Tattoo in Inked In Pink.

The final drugstore favorite I want to show today is the facial wipes in the "Yes To..." line, which began with Yes To Carrots and expanded outward. Of the facial wipes this company offers, there is Yes To Grapefruits (Exfoliating and Brightening), Yes To Blueberries (Age Refresh), Yes To Tomatoes (Blemish Clearing), and Yes To Cucumbers (Soothing). I have tried all but Cucumbers.

Yes To Grapefruits and Yes To Blueberries Facial Wipes

It's impossible for me to understate this: I LOVE THESE THINGS.

My facial skin is delicate. Like, if I use a regular washcloth, my skin will be pink and raw for a day or so afterwards. Also painful. These are amazing! I use Blueberries every night-- no, I don't need Age Refresh, but these smell fantastic. Like lemon blueberry. And they leave my skin feeling fresh and slightly moisturized, not astringent and dry. (I did feel slightly dryer after using Tomatoes). For the newest ones, Grapefruit, there is a subtle exfoliating element that is micro-fine and didn't irritate my skin at all. So yay.

While makeup removing isn't written on the front, these also take makeup off wonderfully. One towlette, and I get everything off. I used one towlette to remove every swatch I took in one day.

Plus? This is just too cute and makes me smile whenver I see it.

I also got my Popsugar Box for 2013 yesterday. As ever, here is my referral code, and get $5 off your first box with the REFERFRIENDS coupon code.

So, the theme of this month was "Spoil Yourself." For me, it had some major hits and misses.

Let's start with the bad.

NICHOLAS SPARKS?? Are you fucking kidding me? Okay, truth time: I enjoyed the movie version of The Notebook because pretty people. But this book? No thanks. And I'm hearing it was a big miss for lots of other people, too. Whatever though, my mom will be thrilled to get this as a gift.

I'm kinda 'meh' on the Brokedown Clothing towel thingy (the white thing in the second picture). I will say that it is super soft, like petting a bunny. But it's also small. I'm not even plus size, and this barely covers my hiney. This is Popsugar's second collaboration with Brokedown, the first of which was a very pretty scarf. This is... less cool than a scarf. But IDK, I haven't used it yet. Maybe it's the bomb? Regardless, it will be hot pink after one use. (This also came with a 30% off coupon for the entire Brokedown site. I am not particularly likely to use this, so if you want it, you can have it!)

And onto the good!

A Hanky Panky thong. It's my color! I was recently joking to Jason that most of the clothing I've bought in the last few months has been magenta, so I got a kick that this was the color I received. I like sexy underwear, so I'm happy. This also came with a 15% coupon for the Hanky Panky site and a free Zoya nailpolish gift with purchase for Popsugar subscribers. Awesome!

CHOOOOCOLATE. MarieBelle New York cacao nibs. These are suuuuuper cocoa-y. Tasty.

Connoisseurs Quick Jewelry Cleanser with brush. Okay, so I have a billionty jewelry cleansers because of what I do. But I haven't tried this one, and this is supposed to be very gentle on skin. The packaging is super cute. I think you'll probably be more excited than me about this, but even so-- this is a great idea, and I'm gonna use it to do my engagement ring, because pink dye seeps everywhere.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Stain in Honey. Ha. Ha. Ha. Of course the first makeup item I get is one I already have. But it's okay, I have plans for this.

Extra: Sweethearts Conversation Hearts. I have a soft spot for these.

So, overall a mixed bag, but more good than bad for me.

Before I go, a few final random shots!
