This Month In Smellies

Mar 26, 2010 17:53

Because I finally hit my "real life" limit today when the news started to report a TN man intentionally rammed an SUV with a child inside because the car had an Obama/Biden sticker. So, no more real life today. Reading the news lately has been horrible for my blood pressure.

Instead, I give you smellies reviews!

BPAL Lupercalia decants:: www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com

Candles Moon:: Moonlight shining on the Quickening Tree, the heat and wax of sacred candles, the milk of ewes, Brigid's blackberry, the sting of keening wind, and the last flutter of the Cailleach's winter snow.

A light, thin cream, a little bit of unripe berry, and some light white musk. VERY pretty! It's not a scent I'd reach for every day, but it is quite evocative.

Bijoux Y'ha-Nthlei:: A strangely proportioned, opulent, lustrous scent: neroli, Hawaiian ginger, white musk, tarragon, beeswax, heliotrope, yellow rose, oud, coriander, amber, and lime peel.

The Hawaiian ginger and the white musk come through the strongest, with a faint, savory aftertang. The coriander? In any case, this is a bit too sharp for me.

Inganok Jewelers:: Gleaming stone and silver.

HOW DID THEY DO IT? This is the scent of polishing sterling silver and tumbling rocks. IT IS. I DO NOT GET IT. I AM BOGGLING.

The Steeple:: Otherworldly fungus, Provençal herbs, and dark, shadowy woods.

Yuck, yuck, no, and blech. Rotting wood.

The Zadok Allen Vineyard:: A deep velvety Cabernet Sauvignon with hints of plum, black cherry, rose petals, coffee bean, and smoky oak. Barrel and bottle aged, with a smooth and spicy hit mid-palate. Hints of Dagon's tarry black incense and clotted blood complete this well-rounded, robust indulgence.

The dregs of a wine bottle that mingle with the scent of the last of the day's coffee. A very dark red scent, and not one I suspect many people could pull off. It's sort of vampiric. Sharp but alluring at the same time.

Smut 2010:: Three swarthy, smutty musks sweetened with sugar and woozy with dark booze notes.

Pretty much the same as older versions of Smut. Red musk, light booze, and a slightly resinous warmth. I really like Smut. Not quite enough to get a bottle, as I have many other bottles in this scent family that I wear often, but it is really nice and super sexy.

Womb Furie:: Snake Oil and three types of honey.

Snake Oil + O. Om nom nommmmmy. It's Snake Oil and honey. In fact, I can't decide which I like more, Snake Oil or Womb Furie. I might have to acquire a bottle despite my slavish addiction to the Holy Grail, Snake Oil.

Luperci 2010:: raw, down and dirty patchouli, Gurjam balsam, and essence of Sampson Root sweetened with the heightened sexuality of beeswax, virile juniper, oakmoss, ambrette seed over honey and East African musk.

A sexy dude scent. J has yet to wear this one because he's been wearing El Dorado constantly. But it's sexy dude musk with a nice undercurrent of beeswax. Pagan dudes: acquire a bottle and get sexed on.

Metal Tiger:: A new year's blessing! Peony, China's national flower, with bamboo for flexibility, plum blossom for perseverance, courage, and hope, tangerine for wealth, orange for happiness, lychee for household peace, pine resin for constancy, golden kumquat and quince for prosperity, narcissus and King mandarin for good fortune, cypress for longevity, and peach fruit and hemp to represent the fourth phase of Wu Xing, with a splash of blazing red of dragon's blood... to help you scare away the rampaging Nian.

Whereas Tintagel is a firmly Autumnal scent, this is its Spring twin. It's probably the dragon's blood, although there is that same woody undertone. And lychee. LOVE lychee. Fruity without being fruit punch, this one is really nice.

Thouros:: Rose otto, lychee, and cistus absolute.

A floral for floral haters. The rose is not BAM rose, but more of a soft, nearly woody floral, tempered by sweet lychee. WIN.

Saint Foutin de Varilles:: Beeswax, frankincense, dried rose petals, and a dribble of wine.

I thought I was gonna hate this on because wine notes and I don't usually mix. But no! It's beeswax and rosepetals on me with a little bit of juiciness. I wore this and people were sniffing me all day. Very lovely!

Two Loves:: Love beyond reach: sunset tones of amber, red musk, and blood orange with three chains of roses, velvet moss, white lilies, crocuses, violets, poppies, blue musk, neroli, angel's trumpet, frankincense, benzoin, and night-blooming flowers.

Neroli & BPAL's slightly astringent white flowers note comes through the strongest wet, and then softens into a velvety floral. It's not my thing, but it might be yours.

Beanman and Beanwoman Prepare to Attack the Vagina:: Skin musk, white amber, ambergris, orange blossom, ylang ylang, and coconut milk.

The notes are right on. There's the creaminess of coconut milk that never goes sour, the tang of ylang ylang and orange blossom, and a little white amber in the back. It's pretty if you want creamy, innocent, and fresh without getting some of the sugar-sweet milk notes BPAL usually offers.

Possets Perfumes:: www.possets.com

Frou Frou:: This perfume is a tribute to the beautiful wistful girl at the bar of the Folies Bergere painted by Edouard Manet. Her mystery among the citizens of the demi-monde and the flowers on the bar and in her bodice are a symbol of the ironies of modern life. This scent brings back the charm of the countryside to the great indoors. A gentle floral unapologetically feminine and classic. Characteristics: floral, perfumy, scent locket, musky, feminine, long lasting.

Very much like Madame X, but sweeter. A soft, creamy, and feminine scent that smells like expensive lotion. Pretty, but unremarkable.

Splendor:: (No desc. Must have been an older LE.)

Herbal, savory, and just a little bit floral. Rosemary, maybe? With basil or primrose? Very fresh, outdoorsy.

Sammy:: (No desc. Must have been an older LE.)

Ruby red grapefruit with sugar!

The Ghost of Christmas Future:: (No desc. Must have been an older LE.)

A cloying confection. Like a butter rum cookie with... raspberry jam? Something fruity. But mostly "WHOA NOT ME GET IT OFF ME."

Gingerbread Whorehouse:: That gingerbread house from your childhood? Well the neighborhood has changed and now it sports a red light out front! Very foody, very sweet, very sexy, very grown up in a sex kitten way. This is European Gingerbread given an American Cajun jolt with the spices, cher! Mmmm. Unisex, sexy-sex, and wow. Oh, the sign outside does say,"Ho Ho Ho House". Heh. You might end up with a whole new reputation. Sweet, foody, gourmand, spicy.

Way too foody for me, and I love gingerbread. Boozy gingerbread.

The Girls Love India:: The impossibly beautiful women of Bollywood and the scurrying violins in the background. Nothing in any way could be as romantic as the resins and extravagant flowers of India mixed with such honey as you only find in the South of the USA. A pungent pairing of exceptionally sweet components which meet, become epic lovers.

Smells like the inside of a Pagan shop. Nag Champa-y with some exotic savory spices. Sexy and mysterious, but also like it's TRYING to be sexy and mysterious.

Madame X:: Wicked, sinful, hedonistic, and irresistable. You may not have the heart to play the femme fatale, but you can at least smell the part. It's musky, creamy, enticing, perfumy, slightly foody, but very skin-like. It has a profound effect on men, they have no idea of what is bothering them ...it's you. It has a profound effect on the wearer as well. Since I created Madame X I have changed my hairstyle, bought a gorgeous black strapless long dress (and have a place to wear it) and many other disturbing personality changes, too. Don't miss out on Madame X. The more I wear this one, the more I love her. A constant favorite among the Possetiers. Characteristics: musky, creamy, feminine, foody, gourmand, scent locket.

Cream and a soft musk. Possets' cream note is a whole lot less cloying than BPAL's hence making it generally more wearable on me. But it does smell a bit like expensive lotion in a way, so it's not too over the top for daytime use. There's something I can't quite put my finger on that makes it distinct, but I do really like it!

Silver Carnations:: There has been a clamber for this and here it is. I really love this one, it turned out better than I thought it would. Long lasting and just beautiful from the start, Silver Carnations stays true from the first moment until the last. The "silver" part that you love combined with the spice and flower carnation that you wanted. A winner.

Pretty! Spicy carnations. Pure, unabashed, spicy carnations. LUFF.

High Tea:: High Tea was rousted out of retirement by popular demand in 2007. A very true to tea blend it has the wonderful characteristic of being warming in the winter and cooling in the summer. Infused with lemon, sugar, milk, and that indescribable scent of the best starched linens, High Tea is your antidote to vulgarity. Always right for the moment and universally admired. This is tea at its most Possety. Characteristics: unisex. refreshing, tea, sweet, cooling, summer scent, warming winter scent, foody, gourmand.

A winner! Sugared roses and lemon with a sweet, soft linen note and the drydown of black tea. LOVE IT, must have a bottle.

Limoncello: Te Amo:: The lemon base is totally without bitterness but redolent with the essence of Amalfi Lemons. This overlays a glorious mixture of rose, lightest crystal musk, a kiss of sugar, and the smallest sliver of basil just for the uplift. Ti Amo Limoncello is very sexy, witty, and perfect for a night at the opera in the heat of summer, followed by music-ignited passion.

Bright lemon with a little bit of sugary rose. Like gelato or Italian ice. And it lasts much longer than most lemon perfumes. I like it.

Limoncello: La Dolce Vita:: Of course, Possets had to celebrate the superb desserts of Italy, and the South has some of the most ineluctable temptations on the planet. Neapolitan Lemons spike the Limoncello here, with the most creamy of panecotta (a triple cream custard with a subtle vanilla and not too sweet). All this is accompanied by a homemade almond biscotti. Just to smell the fragrance of all these treasure is to be in Italy with your love.

OMG LEMON POUND CAKE WITH ICING ON NOM NOM I LUFF IT.

Fantasy Bath Fizzies:: www.fantasybath.com

The TimeKeeper's Daughter:: I have a wonderful friend, Christina Allen Page, who makes the most divine jewelry. Well, it isn't even jewelry really, it is art. When she created a steampunk line of necklaces and earrings using clockwork, gems, crystals and odd bits of mysterious items, I fell in love with it. It transports you to another time and place as all of her pieces do. But this one really spoke to me. I immediately commissioned the title piece & earrings and upon receiving it, I couldn't take it off. (I wear it everywhere and have just ordered more.) I felt the need to create a fragrance that captured it. So this fragrance is dedicated to Christina, her art, her warmth, and her wonderful joy of life. In this complicated blend, we have a a mixed deep amber and rosewood base, heart notes of roses with light spices. Other notes of mysterious brews are there to deepen it and bring out other elements as time passes and just seem right to add mystery and round out this beautiful soft, warm and captivating aroma. Please visit www.sihayadesigns.com. Around March 8th, she will have many designs in this line available. You won't be disappointed! Water color is a deep rosy mauve.

YUM. Love it. It IS ambery and a little spicy, but it is juicy and sweet and refreshing, too. The rose in here isn't grandma rose, but a clean, fresh one that plays so well with the other elements. It reminds me just a little bit of BPAL Persephone, only grown up with an amber base. YUMMY.

Persnickety:: When I was a child, my mother used to call me "Persnickity". I didn't know what it meant, so I looked it up and found it defined someone with rather "particular" taste. She did not mean this in a good way. She was referring to the fact that I was persnickity because I did not eat anything that was white and preferred that my food did not touch on the plate. If this made me "persnickity", then I was willing to be persnickity. After being called this many times, I found that I liked it. I liked saying it too and started using the word as often as I could. Now I have a wonderful bath fizzy made of persimmons, vanilla and a touch of bergamont. Now, I can assure you that these persimmons are very very ripe, but if you have ever had a persimmon that is not quite ripe, let me tell you that you that it is not a pleasant experience. You would have made a face very similiar to the one that my mother made everytime I refused to eat any food that was white. So let us all just be persnickity about something and be of utmost refined taste and eat what we want the way we want and bathe in a persnickity persimmony bath fizzy. Water color is a opaque orange.

Persimmon, dead on. Sweet, juicy, fresh, springy persimmon!

Sedona Sky:: I'll never forget my first trip out west. Growing up in the south, with mountains all around, it was hard to imagine looking out and not seeing a mountain ridge in the distance. The first thing I noticed in was the vastness of the horizon. Except for the occassional mesa or rock outcropping, the sky went on forever. I was usually traveling so fast I didn't have the opportunity to stop and take it all in until I arrived in Sedona, in Red Rock Country. I drove away from the shops and toward the canyons and the further away from the city I drove, the better the air smelled. Dry, fresh with a rocky ozone scent that was so clean and so different from the air here. This bath fizzy is all about that aroma. It is slightly herbacious with leafy greens notes, slightly woody for the dry heart notes and a soft base of musk with a hint of patchouli for the earthy dry bases. A hint of florals and citrus softens it for that light airy ozone and clean feel. Water color is a deep sky blue.

Oh my god, it does smell like Sedona. It's a woody, musky scent that's very unisex and dry at the same time. It's perfectly lovely!

Tanglewood:: The rays of sunlight barely reach through the canopy of thick leaves and wash a tangle of knotted bent trees in gold. They are as ancient as the feral beauty that looks at you through woodland eyes with hair the color of oak and ash. He is what you seek, this is why you came. You turn quickly trying to catch his gaze, hoping that the road will open and you will find your way back to him. But he is gone. You were told that you would no longer be able to walk upon these shadowed paths when you left them years ago, that they would close to you forever. As you sink to the forest floor in tears, your hear a noise and look up. You see the green eyes that have been haunting your dreams. He smiles and takes your hand and guides you through the tanglewood to your new home. Water color is a medium-dark green. Notes of an enchanted forest, Woody resins, leafy greens, exotic florals, light airy notes and enchanting musical things that dance on dew.

The surprise winner. It smells like hiking. Or rather, the great outdoors on the first days of warm weather. It's a leafy green that doesn't smell wilted. I really like it.
