I never really posted about my all-new membership of
westerosorting... I rather predictably ended up in House Tully, and now it is my duty honorably to win points for my family.
This picture was painted for the Modernisation contest. The challenge was to reimagine ASoIaF characters in a modern setting. For some reason, I started wondering what car the Starks would drive if they lived in a modern-day Winterfell, and I ended up with this. I don't particularly like cars and I don't think I've ever really drawn one, and while I was sketching this I repeatedly considered leaving the ugly thing out altogether, but that would rather have defeated the purpose of the whole picture, so I persevered :p.
Photobucket shrunk my image, so if you want to see a larger one (the original is A3), please click the picture - that should take you to dA.
So... this image features Lord Eddard Stark, a technocrat who hasn't been elected but is made Prime Minister by the King, who hopes Stark will be able to subdue the economic crisis. Lord Eddard is allergic to corruption and populism, so he's not exactly popular with the political class - but he's not popular with the electorate either because he intends to impose strict economic measures. In the picture, you see the new PM with his mighty weapon, his iCE phone - a very exclusive smartphone which he uses to stay in touch with the press, supply WikiLeaks with files on corrupt politicians and financial malversations, and to keep an eye on the King's Landing stock exchange. This phone happens to be the envy of Lord Tywin 'Tycoon' Lannister, wealthy banker and politician, who never managed to get his hands on one of these triple security customised beauties.
Lord Eddard is about to leave for King's Landing with his two daughters, Sansa and Arya. The girls are probably arguing about the fact that Arya insists on wearing moon boots when Sansa can't bear to be seen with anyone whose footwear is so totally 'out'.
I have no idea how many hours this took me in all... Including all the sketches I did: many! This painting is A3-sized (41 x 31 cm). Media: pencils + Cotman and Winsor & Newton watercolours on Bockingford Cold-Pressed (NOT) paper. The lack of inks is mostly due to the fact that the deadline was SO close that I didn't have time to ink - I posted my painting at five before midnight on the last submission day X). However, I rather like the resulting softness.
I did something here that I'd never done before (besides drawing a car): I re-used old paint. Normally I always clean my mixing palette after painting, but last time I had quite a bit of mixed paint left and it seemed a shame to throw it away. I've heard that 'old' paint is supposed to be, well, less nice colour-wise than fresh paint, but in terms of colour I have actually rarely painted a picture with which I have been happier. So I think I'm going to break more 'rules' in the future ;-).
NB: Would you believe I mislaid my Sandor Clegane?! And he looked so promising D: ...
