artists statement

Art can convey powerful messages, both conscious and unconscious, about body and mind. Making images is effective therapy for those confronting serious illness and can help those coping with pain and debilitating symptoms to identify feelings of pain through visual language.
The seriously ill often have two explanations for their condition, one spoken and one unspoken. The spoken one is a rational description of the medical condition, the other is a personal private perception of their illness.
Skin and clothing are protection required by our body. But, skin and clothing can only protect so much. What would happen if your body was waging a war on the inside?
My art has been heavily influenced by the above approach, and my personal struggle with Crohn’s Disease. It is a chronology of life with the disorder, intestine, bacterial references, consumption of pills/food, and vomit. Creating art pieces focusing on disease has helped me deal with the transitions in my life and allowed me to get past my fear and anxieties while engaged in the art making.
I constantly seek new ways to reference the same images in non- traditional materials. Sewing, stitching, wrapping, quilting, knitting, various found objects together to create an ethereal effect, transforming the everyday objects into my visual vocabulary of intestinal forms.

thoughts? revisions? it suits me well i believe.
