My kind of Repairman

Feb 27, 2008 21:13

When I couldn't get my furnace to turn on when I got home from work, I placed a call to my landlord. She is planning on replacing the entire system come summertime so she doesn't want to spend a great deal on the current system. She authorizes me to call the oil company and they send a man out.

Everything looks good but something is keeping pressure from building where the sensor is to turn the heat on. He cleans out something called a pigtail, and things are a little better. Then he discovers the float in the low water cut off is sticking. I guess this is normal for a 30 year old furnace that requires water replacement at the rate this one does. Minerals and whatnot build up and keep the little flap from flapping.

This is an expensive component to clean/repair. It should really be replaced, but it is so expensive itself, that replacing the entire furnace is more cost-effective if the landlord is already planning on replacing it.

So, since she wants to wait until summer to replace the system, we're hoping the low water cut-off lasts until then. What am I supposed to do when it sticks?

Whack it.

And keep whacking it until whacking it no longer works.
