Welcome to sign_studies

Welcome, everyone, to sign_studies. This is the first and currently the only semiotics community on LiveJournal, a community devoted to the study of signs. It is a place where we can thematically discuss the existence and nature of signs, and how the operation of signs (semiosis) shapes our worlds of experience. Together we will investigate and analyze the theories of various philosophers and semioticians who have offered us their own take on signs and semiosis, but we should never forget that our studies of these theorists are no substitute for rational reflection on our own experience.

This community is an opportunity for a friendly and intelligent group of LiveJournal thinkers to ask questions, share thoughts and learn from each other. We are interested in understanding signs-what they are, what they do, how they both enable and create worlds of meaning or significance.

Some of us are also interested in how semiotics may provide a counter to different varieties of disciplinary solipsism, fragmentation and territorialism to which specialization within the sciences and the humanities has contributed. Semiotics offers an interdisciplinary and global perspective that frequently serves as a bridge-network among academicians, one that unites individuals and groups from diverse theoretical backgrounds and geographical locations.

Please take note that no knowledge of the discipline of semiotics is required to be a member of this community. Nevertheless, you may wish to peruse the resources provided on our community profile to see if studying semiotics may be of interest to you, or to better acquaint yourself with semiotic theory. Moreover, the posts in this community will vary from more technical and “academic” to a kind of “pop semiotics” aimed at reaching a broader audience.

If you have any questions or suggestions concerning community rules, direction, etc., do not hesitate to ask. I am at your service.
