who;; Mireille & Helikaon
what;; Little late night visit with cookies
when Paris, sometime tonight.
Helikaon knew this was not a polite thing to do, but his grandmother had always said that he should do things from his heart- even if they were impulsive. It was what he wanted to do, he wanted to come here and bring Mireille cookies, her daughter would enjoy them too surely.
Besides, she was working so hard.
So keeping the bag of cookies he made- put in a bag with a pink ribbon at the top, he rang the doorbell of her place and waited.
Well, her daughter was gone now, safely tucked away with family she trusted, far away from Mireille and far from this war. Mireille certainly wasn't expecting someone to come over, nor did she really feel like having company-- especially when she was just wearing a t-shirt and shorts and she knew she had bags under her eyes. But she closed her book, getting up from the sofa to answer the door.
She pulled the door open, to see Helikaon. What was he doing here?
"Oh! ..Hello, Helikaon, it's good to see you. I wasn't expecting company, but.." she opened the door wider to let him in. "Would you like to come in?"
It was only polite after all.
Helikaon took in her appearance and pushed back the surprise he felt. She didn't seem in her best right now, so he had been right to come looking for her. He hesitated and then gave a nod, "Sure, just for a bit, thanks."
"...I didn't mean to disturb you." He fiddled with the bag and then offered the cookies to her.
"It's fine, I wasn't doing anything in particular anyway." She offered a smile and brushed some hair out of her face before accepting the bag.
"...Thank you. Did you bake these yourself?"
"Yeah, I thought you and Aimee would enjoy it." But.. mostly Aimee really since she was a kid and cookies and kid was like peanuts and...something something. Helikaon couldn't remember the rhyme in his head right now.
"Thanks." he scratched the back of his head. He still felt like he had caught her at a bad time. A very bad time.
"Ah, I see. It's very thoughtful of you."
She closed the door behind him and walked into the living room with him, where she motioned for him to take a seat.
"Unfortunately," her smile grew a bit strained, "Aimée is no longer in Paris, I've sent her away with some family for the time being."
"Oh, just... you know," he waved off embarrassed, he just wanted to do something nice for her.
He followed her into the living and took a seat, thanking her while he did so, but when she went to explain where Aimee had gone...
That caused him to get startled right away. "W-what-" he stared at her a mixture of incomprehension and empathy, he had such a hard time leaving his siblings and family back in Crete and... "I'm sorry." Helikaon reached out for her hand gently to rest on hers.
"It's alright, it's what was necessary and it was for the best." Better to be separated for the remainder of the war than to be separated by death. The thought that Mireille herself could die too had crossed her mind, but either way.. it was safer for her daughter to be somewhere else.
She didn't pull away but the touch came as a surprise, it was just something that had become unfamiliar with time.
Helikaon was staring at her evenly, a serious expression on his face now. "Yeah, that is right but it doesn't make the pain any better." Logic and the heart were not the best of friends. She didn't pull away so he gave her hand a squeeze, in another scenario he would've blushed.
Even as a widow she remained faithful to her husband, but she didn't pull away because he was her Knight, and in Mireille's eyes, still something of a child.
"I know. But in the end, hopefully it will be worth it and there will be the chance to make up for lost time."
...It was a good thing he didn't know she saw him as a child, because he would've protested a lot then. Oh and pouted, but right now he was trying to be supportive, to be a good friend to her so. That was important. He didn't want her to be unhappy.
"Yeah, there will, but..." Helikaon bit his lip, trying to pick the right words without coming out as... well, creepy crush-like kid, "...listen, you can talk to me about anything, right? You don't have to be alone meanwhile all this is happening." Okay now he was blushing a bit and he looked down at the floor, "As friends, I'd like to... do anything I can for you. Alright?"
As generous as his offer was, it wasn't likely that she would confide in him, and if she did, it wouldn't be for a while-- Mireille was a private person and the fact that she was now a General and that he was a Knight just added to the feeling that she needed to maintain a distance from him, and people in general.
She gave a more convincing smile this time, putting her free hand over his.
"I understand, thank you. As friends."
